Mniiflits Burst, Barclay and Co. report, under dnto Lor don, January 12th, 1881 : Wheat—Since the opening of tho now year we liavo had a very sluggish trade, both merchants and millers working from hand to month, with very swiill stocks, speculation being discouraged by tha enormous 11 visible supply ” in America. After touching 30,060,000 bushels last week, it is quoted to-day at 28,600,000 bushels. Towards the close, however, a stronger feeling prevails, induced partly by easterly winds, which are keeping back supplies, end partly by tho firmer attitude of American holders. Their shipments are very small, only 525,000 quarters for the fortnight, and it is not improbable that they may gain a temporary advantage owing to our consumers pushing their policy of abstention too far. The stocks of wheat on January lat at tho fourteen chief ports of tho United Kingdom were only 811,000 quarters against 1,612,860 quarters at the same time last year. Nevertheless, there is a general want of confidence, and a belief that prices will give way' ns tho spring advances. Australian being scarce maintains its value on the spot, and there are no sellers of good quality below 51s per 49Cibs. Off coa ;t Murmion sold at 48s 7-id for Havre. On pannage a cargo of 6000 quarters nearly duo per iron ship at 48s 9d United King, doin. For January shipment of tho new crop, 46s 6d paid for a cargo 9060 quarters per wooden ship, and 6d more would bo paid for iron. Of New Zealand tho supplies consist mostly of ill conditioned parcels, which sell slowly at previous prices, say 38s, 435; fair to good 'quality is worth -14 s to 475, and sound lung-berried 18s, 50u por 49Glba. Flour has been neglected, but holders generally remain firm. Mid little or nothing is to he had below 35a per gfiflibs ex store for superfine Australian. Oats —New Zealand descriptions have been pressed for tale, and good heavy parcels weighing 47 to 48)bs per bushel have been sold below 28a per 3841 b», but there is a rather better feeling at the close.
