THE LYTTELTON MAGISTRACY.
To tho hditor cf the Hlobe. Pib, —When we prayed, pleaded and petitioned so earnestly for a R. M. afc Lyttelton, we not only expected "a resident Resident Magistrate," as one gentleman put It, but a capable Resident Magistrate. The gentleman appointed, Dr. Donsld, has served his country faithfully and well, in recognition of which he was placed on the retired list of civil veterans, with an annuity the yearly receipt of which for the remainder of his life was but the acknowledgment by the Government of the just claim of an honorable public servant who had spent the best of his days in the public Bervice. This acknowledgment by the Government gave general satisfaction ; but is it too much to think that his re call to the Bench will have the oontrary effect ? Would it be too much to think that his re-appointment is a mistake ? But whatever reply the people may make to these questions there can be but one answer to this. Is it consistent to treat a man as worn-out in the servioe of his country by placing him in receipt of a pension, and the next moment re-appoint him to the position from which he had just retired ? Yours, &c, CONSISTENCY.
