REWI AND HIS MANSION.

Wo (says the " Waikato Mail ’’) are glad to learn that the chief Bewi is still animated by thoeo sentiments of friendship towards the Government and Europeans to which he gave expression on the memorable occasion of his visit to Auckland. When the key of bis new mansion at Kihikihi was delivered np to him he remarked that he would retain it, but would not take up his residence in the house until be was placed in possession of the Crown grant, when ho would call a moating of the Natives and invite them to express their views as to whether or not they approved of the relations subsisting between himself and the Europeans. He further promised that, in the event of their answer being in the affirmative, he would request the Government to set aside land at Ngaruawahia as a residence for Tawhiao, and would exert himself to the utmost to bring about oordial relations on a permanent basis between the two races inhabiting these islands. Should Bewi be successful in these laudable designs the causes whiob have so long militated against the advancement and prosperity of this part of the North Island will be soon removed, and the colony will start on a fresh career of material progress. The Government, and all who have the real interests of the colony at heart, should do their utmost to aid in this good work.
