GBAHAMSTOWN, February 21. A Threat. Mr George Nathaniel Braosey, who is the solicitor for the accused man Proooffy, has been threatened with violence if he defends the prisoner. Intimation was conveyed to him from Pinha, the chief of the Ngahiko tribe. Alleged Murder. This morning, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, John Droooffi was charged with the wilful murder of Himiona Haere, at Te Aroha. The police applied for a remand until Thursday. Mr Eroseoy, who appears for the accused, said there war no evidence to show a prima facie case against the prisoner, and he objected to the remand. The Bench granted a remand, stating that as Mr Kenwick had begun the case he could continue it. The case was heard before Messrs Murray and Skene, justices. WELLINGTON. February 21. Embezzlement.
William L. Donald, a respectable young man, pleaded guilty to embezzlement of monies belonging to his employers, Messrs Bannatyne and 00., and was sentenced to twelve months' hard labor.

Although the balance-sheet of the Standard Insurance Company presents some unfavorable features, the loss b ing very considerable, this partly arises from the directors having come to the determination to wipe off every possible loss at once, and start afresh under new management. Alleged Embezzlement. Ernest D. Wilkinson, receiver of land revenues and clerk of the C mrt, Hewers, was charged before Captain Walson this morning with having embezzled £l6 13s. Mr Barleyman prosecuted on behalf of the Controller and Auditor-General, and asked fora remand as other snms would have to be accounted for, and witnesses would have to oome some distance. Mr Ward appeared for the accused, and offered no objection, but asked that bail should bo enlarged. The Bench had no objection, and remanded the case until Thursday next. NAPIER, February 20. Death of a Gold Digger. The body of the man found in a creek near Fohui bus been identified as that of Denis O’Brien, recently working on the Mohaka gold fields. Mr Ormond will Speak. At the sitting of the Board • f Reviewers, in reference to clause 24 of the Property Assessment Act, which says that property let for over twelve months shall be assessed at fourteen times its annual rental, an objector urged that the clause did not apply in his case, as his property whs let to sir tenants who were under one roof, and the clause, be held, only applied to cates where a property was let in one lot to a single tenant. The latter would be liable under covenant of the lease to keep property in good order and condition, and fully insured, whereas in his case these expenses fell upon his shoulders. The Court coincided with the view taken by tho objector, and reduced tho amount by £1450, the original assessment being £7440. DUNEDIN, February 19.
