The death is announced of Sir Eiohsrd Graves Maodonnell, who was Governor of South Australia from 1855 to 1861, and who succeeded tho Marqnie of Normanby as Lieu-tenant-Governor of Nova Scotia in 1864. He was sixty-six years of age. Muoh anxiety is felt concerning one of tbe ■learners of the celebrated Canard line, running between New York and Liverpool. The ■taamer is now ten days overdue. There is grave reason to fear the vessel has foundered m one of tbe recent heavy galea. February 9. Under the organised system of contributions, it is arranged by the Irish Land League that, as the funds in hand have accumulated to an extent beyond present requirements, leaders of tho League are investing large ■urns on realisable securities, in order to prepare for future emergencies. A measure introduced by M. Bnquefc for the purpose of legalising divorce in France has been rejected by the French Chamber, after a very animated dieoassion. At the present time the French law does not permit divorce on. any grounds, and the proposal to introduce the right of divorce under certain circumstances is steadily resisted by tbe clerical
