POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, FBBBT/AB,r 16. [Before G. L. Lee and R. Westenra, Esqs, J.P.'s.] Housbbbbaxing.—Edward Wells, on remand from Saturday last, wss oharged with breaking into the shop of Thomaß Yates, bootmaker, Cashel street, on the morning of that day, and stealing therefrom £6 in cash, and a cheque for £3 Is 6d. Mr Superintendent Broham conducted the prosecution; the prisoner, who was undefended, pleading not guilty. Alfred Yates deposed that he was ■son of Thomas Yates. Remembered going into the shop on the morning of the 11th, and finding the panel of the door broken in, and the drawer tampered with, drew the attention of his father to the circumstance. Thomas Yates corroborated his son's evidence, and gave the particulars of the manner in whioh the burglary had been effected, and identified the cheque produced as hia property. J. J. Parker, labor agent, deposed that accused was about his place previous to the 11th inst., and he then stated that ho had got rid of .all his money, and wanted employment. H. A. Davis, pawnbroker, deposed tnat accused came to his place of business on the 12th inst., and, purchasing a rug for 18s 6d, tendered in payment a cheque for £3 Is 6d. Identical cheque producod. In consequence of information received he handed accused over to Sergeant Hughes. John Woodward, Jan., deposed that prisor.c;' camo into his father's shop on the 12th, and purchased a .pair of boots, for which he paid 10s 6d in silver. Sergeant Hughes proved tho arrest of accused, who said that he had found the ■cheque tho previous night. E. A. Ogmi, clerk in the Bank of New Zealand, proved the (genuineness of tbe cheque. The prisoner, who had nothing to say, was committed to take his -trial at the next Criminal Sessions of the .Supreme Court in Christohuroh.
