Bluebell Sir Tatton The Field Astronomer Hero Grey Momna Outcast POVERTY BAY RACES. [By Telegraph.] GISBORNE, February 11. There was a good attendance at tho races today. Hup.dle Handicap, over eight hurdles. Distance, two miles, Mntau 1 Skysail ... ... ... ... ... 2 Rata , 3 A splendid race. Skysail took the hurdles first, the rest following in grand stylo. Not a single horse baulked at any of the hurdles in tho second round. Up the straight run Skysail kept the lead to within a few yards of the judge’s post, closely followed by Matan. Too latter, when nearing the judge’s post, under application of the whip, by a grand effort forged to the front, winning by a neck, with Skysail second, and Rata third nt a long distance behind. Matan appeared to be the favorite in tho sweeps and the totalisator, which were well patronised by tho public, Fly was scratched. Hack Hurdle Race ; lost up. Matai 1 Luck’s All ... ... ... ... 2 Sylvio ... _ ... _ 3 There were six entries, and the race was a capital oce. Publicans’ Purse Handicap. Distance, li miles. Mavis ... ... ... ... ... 1 Matan 2 West End 3 Waramera 4 A good start was effected. West End led half way round the course, when Mavis overhauled West End, which appeared done up. Matan passed West End, and challenged Mavis, which responded by easily passing him, winning by a length. Tubanoa Stake Handicap of 100 sovs. Distance, two miles. Merlin 1 Angler 2 Foul Play 3 Director 4 This was the race of the day, and much interest was felt in the result. At the totalisator and the grand stand Director was freely backed, notwithstanding that he was declared as carry, ing 31bs over. Merlin was second favorite. In the first round Angler appeared first, with Director second, and the rest following in a heap. Foul Play bringing up in the rear. In tho straight running, the horses came in with Merlin leading, with Angler on his left. Foal Play tried to cut in between them ; but, failing, to do so, lost his chance. Paramea was scratched. Angler declared 31ba, and Flying Beauty 81ba oyer. Consolation Handicap. One mile and a distance. Angler 1 Ruapehu ... 2 Scrip ... ... ... ... ... 3 This was a well contested race.
