MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
oHßiaioauEoa. Saturday, February 12 [Before O. L. Leo ami R. Wostonra, Eeqs., J.P.’s.] Dbunkhnnksb.—William Jilillan was fined Ss for being drunk and disorderly. Assaulting a Bailiff. —Peter Anderson was charged with assaulting ti. L. Friedman, a bailiff, in the execution of his duty. Prosecutor deposed that when attempting to distrain on a cow, at tho residence prisoner, on the 4th inst., prisoner charged him with a gorse knife. Prisoner’s wife caught his arm, prevented him from using it, but tho cow got away, and has not heon since. Tho bailiff’s assistant coi rob crated this statement. Tho prisoner, who is a foreigner, denied the assault. Tho Bench said they thought perhaps he did not understand the gravity of the offence, and they would deal leniently with him. He was fined 40s, expenses of one witness 9s, and costs 2s, or in default one week’s imprisonment, with hard labor.
