The report that the Boers have been guilty of atrociously butchering the wounded prisoners taken from the colonial forces has been officially contradicted. It has been ascertained that they treat the prisoners humanely. Their attitude, however, is intensely warlike. At the meetings of the Union and English, Scotch, and Australian Banks, the shareholders were jubilant at the satisfactory reports pro* sented. The crews of the Oxford and Cambridge Universities have commenced practising for the annual aquatic contest. The latest advices from Natal state that the Basuto rebellion is practically crushed, and the hostile tribes are now suing for peace. Her Majesty Queen Victoria has sent a cable message of condolence to Governor Colley upon their recent reverses sustained by his troops in the Boers’ rebellion. ST. PETERSBURG, January 31.
It is stated that General Skobeloff, the Russian commander of the expedition against the Tekke Turcomans, after his victory over the enemy at Geok Tape, pursued them to Askbofbad.
