[Per a.a. Wakatipu at Wellington.] LONDON, January 18. A hurricane snowstorm of unprecedented fury swept over a great part of England, causing incalculable destruction to property, and involving it is feared great loss of life. The storm raged during Tuesday night with appalling force, sweeping everything before it. Within the recollection of none living has such a calamity visited any part of the United Kingdom. On the Eastern Coast tho hurricane raged most furiously, and traffic on the railway linos with London was abandoned throughout. Great damage was done to the lines and rolling stock. Tho condition of thousands of homeless people is pitiful in the extreme. Tho Thames overSlowed, and submerged large areao of laud at Woolwich. The pier was entirely demolished, and everywhere was disaster and devastation. Incalculable is the shipping loss in the Thames. Serious riots occurred at Wigan on January
17th. The weather still continues most inclement, and generally of a severe character. Violent snow storms of long duration have occurred in Europe and America. Tho Russian forces under Skobeloff are still at Maintain, siege of Goektepe. The Turkomans made several vigorous sorties, and were repulsed with much loss. Sir Leopold Rothschild is married, the bride being Countess Perugia. The ceremony was of a very imposing character. The Prince of Wales and Lord Rosebery were among the guests. January 20, Owing to tho continued severity of the weather the Thames continues icebound. The race between Hanlan and Layoock it is utterly impossible can come off for many days. It hoi been decided that all bets on the race shall bo declared off after Sunday next. The Victoria appeal case from the Supreme Court of Tempest and Defrauder v Goldsbrough was decided hy the Privy Council that the appeal should be discharged. The members of the British Government are exasperated by the continued obstruction of tho Irish members. The Speaker euggested tho appointment of a committee to search for precedents as to the extent of his powers in case the ruling of the chair continues to be ignored. It was considered probable that decided steps would be taken by the Ministry immediately, unless tho Irish members abandoned tho course pursued, of which there is scarcely any hope. Tho debate, notwithstanding the vote on the motion for amendment to tho address, has been reopened in various ways, and tactics of ohstruotion have been vigorously pursued. A series of amendments wore moved on the address and no sooner was one negatived than another one was proposed. Mr Gladstone threatens strong measures. A frightful accident occurred at Batley, West Riding, Yorkshire. A boiler in a factory exploded, and over 30 persons were killed and wounded. O. J. Poole, a well known journalist, long connected with tho metropolitan press, is , dead. Over 3000 inhabitants of Barrington, LinI oolnshire, have deserted their homes in coni sequence of tho frightful storms causing tho > overflow of tho rivers and destruction of j house property. Tho people have taken t refuge in Lincoln and tho adjacent towns and i 1 villages.
