UNION ROWING CLUB.
The third and final heats of the Union Bowing Club fours came off on Wednesday and Thursday evenings last. The prize, as before mentioned, was for Mr Henry Thomson’s cup. The following are the results :—Third heat—Electric, south bank— Ofaas. Badgers, stroke; E. A. Button, 3; W. A. Styohe, 2 ; I. J. Thomson, bow ; H. V. Styche, cox. Thetis, north bank—S. O. Kesteven, stroke ; E. Borland, 3; A. D. Eraser, 2 ; E. J. Gilchrist, bow ; W. H. Wolodge, cox. The boats were sent well away together, and kept on even terms for at least a quarter of a mile. Here the Electric had the first bend in her favor, and drew round a clear length ahead ; a good race ensued to Pratt’s. It was generally thought that the Thetis would be able to regain her laurels at this corner, but Eodgors had plenty left in him, and won a good race by one length. Eesteven, who was suffering from ill-health, was hardly in a fit state for rowing. Einal heat—Electric, south bank—Charles Bodgers, stroke ; F. A. Button, 3 ; W. A, Styche, 2; I. J. Thomson, bow; H, Y. Styche, cox, Thetis, north bank—E. Fuller, stroke ; C. Allard, 3 ; E. G. Wright, 2 ; J. E. Johnston, bow; W. H. Dunnage, cox. Mr F. D. Kesteven, who had officiated as starter throughout, sent the boats away on even terms. Bodgers, giving his men a livelier stroke than his opponent, held a slight lead to Butterfield’s. Here Fuller, who had been entangled in the weeds, came up, and a good race ensued to the Tannery. The Electric did not show such good form as the Thetis, perhaps on account of the tussle they had the night previous. Fuller now had a clear length to his credit, which was hold throughout, although Badgers came up well at the finish, only losing by two lengths. Three cheers were given for both crows. The time Was 12min. 40.ie0., 20soo. slower than the night previous. This will almost end the club races, and the committee will now select crews to go into training for the Heathoote Begalta, and from the result of the above race there should be plenty of good men to choose from, and who will give a good account of themselves.
