THE GLOBE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 22, 1881. A SUGGESTED CONVENIENCE.

Moeb than one paper in the colony has of late taken up a subject which it would appear well to ventilate, because, if something could be done in the matter, the public would he much henefitted thereby. Our facilities of communication with America are now greatly increased. The country lies in the direct line between Now Zealand and Great Britain, and the mail service is admirably conducted. So far os oar postal connec-

tion with the United States is concerned it is all that can he wished. With regard, too, to largo money transactions, the way is clear enongh. A banker’s draft is obtained and all is settled, when money has to be forwarded. But say that a man wishes to obtain some small thing, such as a book or a “ notion,” that he sees advertised, he has no means of doing so, except through the medium of an agent in one of the New Zealand towns. Both time and money are lost in this process. It is evident that if the PostmasterGeneral were to devise a scheme by which money orders could be sent to America, it would bo found very handy for a large section of the population. The affair is a more matter of account, and there should bo no insuperable difficulties in the way. The closer our bonds with a large manufacturing nation, such as the Americans have now become, are drawn the better. For, without weakening our ties with the Mother Country, we should be enabled to draw many advantages from the connection.
