[PBBSB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] NAPIER, January 20, The second day’s meeting of the Racing Club was more successful than the first from a sporting point of view, as the fields were larger and the races were better contested. Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs ; two miles. Mr Lyons’ Loch Lomond, list 71b 1 Mr Wheeler’s Matan, list ... ... 2 Mr Douglas’ Rawenata, lOst 121 b 3 Ada and Hathaway also started. Betting—2 to 1 Matsu, 3 to 1 Rawenata, 6 to 1 Loch Lomond and Ada. Harkaway made the running, with Bawenata second, and Lomond third. Ada baulked at the first hurdle. Rawenata ran up at the second hurdle, taking the lead and winning easily. Racing Club Handicap, of 100 sovs; one mile and a half. Mr Walters’ Libeller, 9at 1 Mr Murray’s Merlin, Oat 2 Mr Keith’s Sonkar. Bst lolb ... ... ... 3 Midge and Moanatiri also started. Libeller lay back at the start, leaving Merlin to make the running, but on nearing home the favourite ran through his horses, winning by a neck. District Plate of 50 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr Murray’s Mavis, Bst 111 b 1 Mr Wheeler’s Matau, 9st lib 2 Mr Douglas’s Primrose, 7st 111 b 3 Hailstorm, Hero, and Addition also ran. Hailstorm was the favourite at oven money, 3 to 1 agst Mavis, 5 to 10 to 1 the others. Matau was the - first away, but was soon caught by Hailstorm, Mavis taking second place. Hailstorm was beaten at the half distance. Mavis and Matau ran a grand race home, but Mavis staying longest won a capital race on the post by a neck. Primrose was a good third. Addition bolted. A protest has been entered against Angler the winner of the Ladies’ Purse, on the ground that his rider, Murtagh, is a professional jockey. The owner and jockey of a horse engaged in the Hack Hurdle Race were disqualified under peculiar circumstance. The owner backed him in the totalisator on learning that the money was paid for the first past the post. He then instructed the boy who rode to run across the course so as to get in first. The totalisator man refused to pay, which led to an investigation, when the boy stated his instructions.
