Probably owing to the delay of the mail steamer the Hon. T. Dick will not proceed to the Sydney Conference. Political RailwaysA Thames deputation waited on the Hon. P. Whitaker and urged the construction of the railway to connect Grahamstown to Kopuru, in order to convert tbe latter place into a depot for the Upper Thames. Mr Whitaker explained to the deputation that as he was largely interested at Kopuru he oould not take an active part in his Ministerial capacity in the project, but it the deputation would embody its views in a memorandum, he would forward it for the consideration of the Minister for Publio Works. Racing. The second day's racing at Cambridge was about the best ever witnessed in the Waikato. Tho following are the results: —Publicans' Purse (handicap) of 25 sovs, Vampire 1, Yatapa 2, Lonehand 3. Waikato Steeplechase of 50 sovs. This was a splendid race, and was won by Lonehand by a neck, Sportsman 2. Grand Stand Handioap of 25 sovs— Vampire 1, Harry Mount 2, Ratcatcher 3. FireA seven-roomed house belonging to Mr Bartholomew Soanlan has been burnt down at Papakurn. It was insured in the Transatlantic for £3OO, and the furniture for £IOO. HAWERA, January 13. FatalityA report has just come in from Clive that a man named Caldwell met his death in a singular manner. He was carting earth from the swamp, and his mate found the horao and cart overturned in the ditch at the edge of the swamp, with Caldwell's dead body underneath. Handicapper. Mr J. O. Evett has been appointed handicapper to the Jockey Club. Municipal Rowdyism. There was a very rowdy scene at the Borough Council this evening over the appointment of Mr Marchant as borough engineer. An adjournment was ultimately agreed to, as Mr Merchant's supporters knowing that a majority was against them, were talking against time. Satisfactory. Dr. Bailor has effected an amicable settlement of the Waito survey difficulty. The theodolito and other survey instruments seized and impounded by Renata's people some weeks ago have been delivered up to Mr Leesong, and satisfactory terms arranged. WELLINGTON, January 13. LegalThe Supreme Court was occupied all yesterday and to-day hearing the case Willis v Martin. The claim was for £578 3s 9d, less £4OO paid by defendant. The plaintiff sued to reoover the above sum for services rendered by him as auctioneer on behalf of the defendant, the Hon. J. Martin, M.L.0., in connec- ' tion with a sale of property situated in tbe Wairarapa district, and known as Martinborough. Tho jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for £149 13s 7d. The College. At a meeting of the College Governors to-day it was resolved—" That with a view of re-organising the Wellington College, the engagements of all the masters should terminate six months from this day." Waste Land Sale. The Waste Lands Board to-day deoided on putting 30,000 acres in the market next month. The land is situated chiefly on the West Coast. Caution to Master MarinersThe oaptain of the Northumberland has been called upon to enter into a bond of £ LOO under the Imbecile Passenger Act of 1873, in consequence of having brought out a youth named Henry Pottingor Wills, who has just been committed to the Lunatic Asylum. TIMARU, January 13. The Rioters. Judgment in the rioters' case has been postponed till Saturday. DUNEDIN, January 13 The Harvest. Harvesting has now been commenced in many districts, and the weather is favorable. The Shallow Harbour. The Deputy Harbor Master has reported to the Harbor Board that tho Arawata, whioh left the Bailway pier at 4.50 p.m. yesterday, drawing 16fl; 2in, crossed the bar before low water. The oaptain of the British Sceptre has reported that his veesol, drawing 19ft 6in, entered the harbor by tho northern channel without touching. Earthquake. A strong shook of earthquake was felt at Cromwell at eleven minutes past one today.
