King, foreman of Austin's boot faotory, who was stabbed by the apprentice Hugh Storey while ohastising him for misconduct, was charged with unlawful assault. Theevidence showed that Austin delegated such authority to the foreman, but the Magistrate held that he could not do so, and fined King 40s, and costs £3 7s. Storey awaits bis trial at the criminal sittings for stabbing King, NELSON, January 11. The Election. The suburbs election resulted in the return of Mr A. S. Collins by 189 to 159, a majority of 30. The Murderer Te Warepa. The sentence of death passed on Te Warepa, the Chatham Island murderer, has been commuted to imprisonment for life. GREYMOUTH, January 11. Mining Ketura. The municipal account for Dunodin is new overdrawn at the Bank of New Zealand to the amount of 410,039 5s 83.

Tho-Government have had a return prepared of persons who arrived in the oolony Snd left it during December, and also during he year 1880. During the latter 15,152 persons -arrived in the colony, viz., 8514 from England (including 8688 Government immigrants), 5897 from the Australian colonies and 741 from other places). The number that left the oolony was 7918, inoluding 6373 for the 'Australian colonies, 811 for England, and 734 other places, kjaving a balance in favor of New Zealand of 7773 in all, or 5015, exeluding Government immigrants. In the month of December the balance from New Zealand was 837. In September 278 arrived from Australia, and ■ 846 left for Austroha, and in December 825 arrived, and 517 left for the same colony. These returns show well for New Zealand, notwithstanding croaking.
