CITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the City Council was held last evening. They went into committee to consider the licenses, and on resuming certain resolutions were reported. The Council then proceeded with the ordinary business. The accounts up to the 10th inst. were— Receipts on general accounts, £4Ol 6j lOd ; bills to be paid, £4OB 13s ; receipts on drainage rate, £62 ; drainage rate, No. 2 account, £1 Is 7d. The accounts were passed. A deputation of cabmen were in attendance re the licensing fees, but did not wait, the Council being so long in committee. A letter was read from Mr Archibald Scott, secretary to the Canterbury Fire Insurance Association, enclosing £SO as a contribution towards the sinking of the Victoria street well, as per agreement. The Town Clerk won ordered to acknowledge the letter with thanks. Moved by Or. Lambert, and carried—“ That In compliance with the Dog Registration Act, 186iO, this Council hereby appoint the Town Clerk registrar of dogs, and the City Council office to be the registration office for the city of Christchurch.’’ The water supply committee’s report on the beat method of flushing the side channels was read, and after considerable discussion, postponed. On the motion of Or, Thomson, seconded by Or. King, the matter of purchasing two water carts was referred to the works committee, with power to act. Or. Ayers tendered his resignation as a member of the water supply committee. The resignation was accepted, and Cr. England elected to fill the vacant place. The Council, at a late hour, adjourned to its ordinary meeting on the 24th insj., at the usual hour. A special mooting of the Council will be held on the 17th, at 6.45, for the purpose of considering the Building By-laws, and also the taking over of a private street.
