John Bussell, for burglary at Oamaru, was sentenced for three months. This concluded the business. Sudden Death. Alfred Garn, a tailor, aged fifty-seven,, whilst walking from the kitchen to his bedroom last night, fell and expired in the armi of his family before assistance was procurable. His death occurred from natural causes. Defeat. Ex-Mayor H. J. Walter was defeated by Sooular, an untried man, by 276 votes. A Shallow Channel. The Te Anau reports twice bumping on the bar, though drawing only 14Jft, at threequarter Hood.

At tho inquest on the infant found, dead in bed yesterday a verdict was returned " Accidental Suffocation.”
Body Found.
The body of tho seaman Walter Picketts, ■who has been missing from tho schooner Fleet wing since 31st ult, was found floating in the harbour to-day. From the deceased's scanty clothing on tho body leaves no doubt that the deceased attempted to swim off to the vessel and was drowned. AUCKLAND, January 6, Good Tidings. Mrs Hampson has concluded her Evangelistic services, securing 400 converts to the different churches. She has to hand numerous invitations to visit country districts. Seven tenders were received by Jtho Harbor Board to-day for the construction of tho third section of the breakwater, and that of Messrs Jones and Peters at £4910 was accepted. It was resolved to at once connect the wharves with tho railway line, A petition signed by over 100 influential citizens was received in favor of carrying the breakwater 400 feet further out to sea than originally intended. Tho petition was favorably received, and the Government will be communicated with accordingly, Tho work so far has been a great success, and provides shelter for vessels drawing fifteen feet. The depth of water at the outer end is now twenty-two feet at low apring tides. The Board have still over £40,000 in hand out of tho £IOO,OOO endowment. I understand that the Government received a telegram from Pungarehu Camp to day, to the effect that according to statements of Natives in the district. To Whiti has revoked his previous order forbidding released prisoners to visit Faribnka, and had summoned all liberated captives to attend there at this month’s meeting. This is regarded to be a favorable sign, as indicating a change of front more in tho direotion of submission. Judge Halso and Captain Hume, who conducted the inquiry yesterday into the charges of ill-usage of Native prisoners, have not yet reported tho result, but the evidence has been sent to tho Government, and it completely demolishes the allegations mado by the pretended friends of tho Natives. The Natives nil declare that they are quite satisfied with their treatment, and have nothing whatever to comploin of. One said he only wished that he could have ton years of tho same fare. Tho only complaint was by one man, that ho was kept to work after his hard labor term of sentence expired. This is being investigated. Buyers BewareI have a pleasant little bit of news for yon. L boar on the authority of one of tho leading merchants hero that kerosene, condemned as under the legal standard of safety, has for a long time past been re-shipped to Christchurch and Dunedin, whore tho law is not enforced so strictly as in Wellington, and sold in those cities without tho special safeguards proscribed by the Act. This may account for the frequent fires in the South this year, and is worth investigating.
