A boy named Taylor, three years old, waa severely burnt on Christmas Eve, by his night-dress accidentally catching fire, Ha lies in a precarious condition. SuffocatedAn infant, ten weeks' old, of Mrs Gosling's, was found dead in bed this morning. It is supposed to have been overlaid in bed by its mother during the night. DUNEDIN, January 6. Supreme CourtAt the Supreme Court the following sentences were passed : —John Gately, larceny, three years ; Robert Muir, forgery, eighteen months; William Adams, forgery, four years. AUCKLAND, January 5. Good Quarters. Joe, the Fijian murderer, has got quite fat and sleek. In Mount Eden Gaol he boa obtained the soubriquet of “ Happy.” Sporting. At Tattersall’s considerable sums of moneychanged hands, and engagements were promptly kept. On the whole the proceedings were satisfactory, although some loading bookmakers are said to be pretty heavily struck. The Knife. Hugh Storey, a boy, has heen committed for stabbing O. B. The G.W. treasurer and G.W. superintendent of tho Juvenile Templars submitted their reports. An animated discussion took place especially upon the question of dancing being

Tho average was 8361 males and 7697 females, maklw a total of 16,058, being an Increase on the previous quarter of 524, and on tho corresponding quarter of last year of 1421. INVERCARGILL, January 5. StatisticsIn December there wore 52 births, 7 deaths, and 13 marriages. For tho year tho figures were—births 587, deaths 143, marriages 99, or 64 less than 1879.
