MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
OHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Januaby 3. [Before G. L. Mellish, Eijq., R.M.] Drunkenness.—W. J. Nankarvis, alias Maples, alias Bowden, an old offender, was fined 20s. H. W. Strange was charged with being drunk and disorderly at Papanui on Saturday night last, and assaulting Constable Flanagan, who arrested him. Prisoner had only been discharged from Addington at five o'clock in the afternoon of that day, after doing a month's imprisonment for a similar offence. He now said that he suffered periodically from concussion of the brain, and thought that was the real cause of his present trouble. Fined 20s for drunkenness, and 40s for the assault. Two men, for first offences, were fined 5s each. Imboai, Rbsopb op Cattle.—William Kilday, brought up for preventing the ranger from impounding two head of cattle, admitted tho offenoe, saying in excuse, that the officer was knocking the cattle about in trying to drive them. The magistrate said the law left him no discretion, and he was bound to inflict the full penalty. Fined £5.
