POLICE COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, December 30. (Before R. Walton and L. E. Nathan, Eaqs., J.P’s.l Dstthkeknebs —D. McDonald, for being drunk and disorderly on the 28th and again on the 29th, was fined 5s for the first and 10s for the second offence, and to pay cab hire, la 6d. Assaults. John Murphy was charged with violently assaulting B. Sparks and F. Blowers at Lower Lincoln road on the 27th inst. It appeared by the evidence that on the night in question at the Black Horse Hotel accused throw a stone at a trap. Sparks remonstrated with him, and accused knocked him down, A fight took place between the two, in which six other men, friends of Sparks, interfered. Accused, after severely handling Sparks got over a gate and ran away homewards. The seven men followed him, or were going homo that way, and another row took place, in whick sticks were used. Accused beat four out of the seven men, knocked them down, kicked them, and otherwise ill-treated them. and Sparks suffered most, the former got his loft arm cut and disabled witH a stick, and Sparks was frightfully battered about the face. Accused himself, who swore that Sparks " surrounded ” him in the first part of the row, and that the rest had set upon him, seemed to have been badly cut about the face. Mr Thomas made a strong appeal to the Bench in favor of accused, on the ground that he bad not been the aggoesor, and that ho had been overweighted. The Bench were of opinion that accused had been guilty of unprovoked and savage assaults on Sparks and Blowers, and fined him £5 in each case, or one month’s imprisonment, the expenses of a doctor for both to come out of the fines.
