HEAVY HAILSTORM AT SOUTH BRIDGE.
On Wednesday morning the township of Southbridge was visited by one of the heaviest hailstorms, while it lasted, ever known in the district. The early morning was bright and warm, but about 8 o’clock a distant rumbling was heard, much like a strong wind getting up, and a large black cloud could be discerned coming up from the south-west, and ten minutes after it broke, causing man and beast kto clear out for the nearest shelter. Ififteon minutes hailstones fell valuing in size from small marbles to a large pigeon’s egg. nid in a few instances even much larger, one nliable gentleman in the township having Keasnred one hailstone 2in. by IJin. After leaving Southbridge the storm took a turn 'towards the Port Hills. A quarter of a mile to the north of Southbridge the storm was not felt at all, neither was it at Leeston. Great damage has been done to crops in its route, and gardens have also been very much dealt oyed.
