RACING IN ENGLAND.
By the San Francisco mail we have full particulars of the Newmarket Houghton meeting. Thebais has added another winning bracket to her score by winning the valuable Criterion Stakes and Home Bred Foal Stakes. The Cambridgeshire, we are told, was rather a tame race after all, though interesting in one respect from the fact that among the field were representatives of England, France and America. The winner turned up in the four-year-old Lucetta, by Tibthorpe out of Verona. It was considered a very lucky victory for the filly (who is own sister to Thurio), for most people thought Fernandez should have won. A protest was entered by Fordham, the rider of Fernandez, on the ground of a cross. There was a tremendous excitement over the matter, but the stewards disallowed it, and the stake went to Lucetta. There can be no question, however, that in Fernandez, who is own brother to the groat Isonomy, Mr Gretton possesses an exceptionally grand colt. Isonomy himself, by the way, won this very race in 1878. The following items from the “Sportsman,” all bearing more or less on the result of the Cambridgeshire will be read with interest:— “ While the stewards were hearing the objection on the' Cambridgeshire Mr Gretton, who had previously betted 500 to 200, laid 2000 to 1000 on Lucetta getting the stake. This was, of course, only hedging to the largo amount of money he had invested on his own horse.
“ Amongst other double-event bets on the Cesarewitoh and Cambridgeshire, was one of 10,000 to 30 against Robert the Devil and Lucetta, this being taken by Count Jaraozewski.
“ Febnakdez v Lucetta. —Acting on the advice of his trainer, Mr Gretton declined to go on with thii proposed match, though Prince Boltykoff was willing to run Fernandez for any sum up to 3000 sots. In the Dewhurst: Plate, the penalty proved too much for Bt. Louis, and Lord Falmouth just won it by a head with the flyer Bal Gal, His lordship is always dangerous in this race, as be was second last year with Ambassadress, and he won it the previous year with Wheel of -Fortune. The American-bred horses took a couple of events, and Carbine, a daughter of Musket, placed -.a two-year-old race to tbo credit of her owner. At Sandown Park the previous week the big event, the Sapling Plate (for two-year-olds) of 1000 so vs, was won by Montrose, a son of Scottish Chief. The English -Grand Flaneur, I had almost-forgotten to not?, won a good stake again et-the Houghton Meeting, and from his previouausuccessful performances must be like his Australian namesake, a clinking good colt, Robert the Devil was put up to auction recently, but failing to realise the reserve of £12,000 placed on him -by his owners was passed in. 'His owners intend sending him'to the stud nest season, limiting him to a few meres. In connection with the extraordinary performances of Robert the Devi], “ Amphion” thus cleverly delivers himself in the pages of “Bally”: “ Can we trust to our senses ami eyes P Does the ghost of a shade of a doubt To the -vaunted Bible of breeders, the (Koran of Weatherby cling ? He will not part with hia yearling*, which are all Tory promising, including Garb Or, brother to Bend Or, and
a grand colt by Doncaster, out of Freia, and some others. Sterling end Hermit's list are both full at 150 guineas, and Silvio’s list was also closed. In a recent Hsue wo noticed the retirement of the celebrated Hungarian-bred mare Kinceem from the turf, in consequence of a hick received from a stable companion. The unbeaten heroine was sent to Kisber and bred to Vorneuil, but as it has turned out that Kincsera is indisposed to assume the cares of maternity, tor owner has concluded to put her again in training, the mare having quite recovered from her temporary lameness. Next spring, therefore, wo may expect to see the invincible daughter of Oambuscan and Water Nymph again piloting her owner’s colors to victory. During the four years of her public career on the turf, Eincsem won fifty-four races without encountering a single defeat. In 1876, as a two-year-old, she won ten races. In 1877, as a three-year-old, she captured seventeen ; in 1876 she landed fifteen; and in 1879, twelve. Her only appearance on the English turf was in 1878, in the Goodwood Oup, when she defeated Pageant and the favorite, Lady Golightly, in a big gallop. Although this mare was bred to Verneuil, it is said she was not prepared to receive his embraces, and the remarkable foot is further announced that throughout the four years of her racing career she never the least symptom indicating the right condition for the stud. Is there a parallel case on record ? Cook and Mitchell have had a big billiard match at St. James’ Hall. The terms were £4OO a side, 2000 up, Mitchell receiving 400 points. Cook won eventually by 404 points in four hours seven minutes. Throughout the whole match, luck seems to have been dead against Mitchell. Rowell, the famouslong distance pedestrian, has won recently the Astley belt for the third time, making the greatest score on record, 566 miles. He was not pushed, and claims that he can walk 600 miles in the six days.
