SABBATH SCHOOL TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE.

The annual meeting of the Canterbury Sabbath Sohool Teachers’ Institute was held yesterday evening in the Congregational schoolroom, Manchester street. The attendance was fairly numerous, the president (Mr O. B. Taylor) occupying the chair. A few introductory remarks were made by the chairman in reference to the business of the meeting, after which the secretary was called upon to read the annual report and balancesheet. Mr Chisholm then read an ably written and exhaustive statement of the proceedings of the institute during the past year, showing the number of meetings held, together with the addresses given by the various clergymen, and the work done generally by the committee. The report expressed satisfaction at the result of the operations so far, the monthly meetings of teachers especially having been productive of great good. In conclusion, the committee had reason to believe that apart from the lectures, one great good had been accomplished, namely, that of bringing the teachers of the various Sunday-schools together, who before were comparatively strangers to each other, and thus producing a better feeling amongst them in uniting them in the strongest bonds of Christian sympathy. By thus meeting on a common platform of Christian usefulness, all sectarian differences were forgotten, and the teachers, while meeting to devise the best methods of imparting religious instruction to the young, would not be without their reward in that day, when it would be said to them by their Lord and Master —“Inasmuch as ye did it unto the least of these, ye did it unto Me.” The report and balance • sheet were then adopted, and it was reresolved that the entire report and balancesheet be printed and circulated among all the Sabbath School teachers. Votes of thanks were accorded to the retiring committee, and the following officers elected for the eneuing year:—President, Mr O, E. Farr; vicepresidents, the Bov. Mr Slocum and Mr O. E. Brown, of Lyttelton ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. B. Chisholm; committee, Messrs O. B, Taylor, H. J. Boss, J. Woodham, W. Dexter, T. Jones, J. S. Cooke, W. Christian, J. Cameron, and J. W. Staples. It was resolved to hold the celebration meeting—taking the form of a public soiree—in January next. A vote of thanks to the trustees of the Congregational Church for the use of their vestry during the past year for committee meetings, was recorded, and the meeting then adjourned.
