SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held last evening in the Borough Council Chamber at seven o'clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor and all the councillors. A letter was read from the Cbief Postmaster, advising that the Sydenham Post-office would be open for business on December 17th ; also from the Telegraph Department, stating that all messages within a radius of one mile would be delivered free, but a charge of Is a mile or fraction of a mile beyond that distance would be charged. The letters were received. Mr John Ad cock, cabman, wrote chiming £3 damages to his cab caused by a defective culvert in Palsgrave street. It was stated that as the accident occurred on a private street not yet made over to the Council, that body was not responsible. After some discussion the matter was referred to the works committee. The Spreydon Boad Board wrote complaining of a charge of 7s per day made by the Sydonham Borough Council in connection with the maintenance of a boundary ro&d, and declining to pay more than 6s per day in the future. The matter was referred to the finance committee. The works committee reported that the report and plans of the South belt works had just been received; that the levels, &0., had been approved by the Christchuroh City Council; also stating that tenders would be called for the work forthwith. The finance committee reported that the fortnight's receipts were £622 lis 4d ; expenditure, £BBB 8s sd. Credit at bank, £1692 18s 2d. Also, that a letter in reply had been received from the Spreydon Boad Board stating that the matter of the redistribution of funds allocated could not be further considered
the question being already settled. Cr. Charters moved—" That the report be adopted, and that the Spreydon Road Board be written to, stating that if the amount olaimed bo not paid by January 15th, legal proceedings will be immediately taken for its recovery." After considerable discussion, the resolution was carried by Bto 1. Or. Charters oalled attention to the danger accruing from the lowering of Wilson's road, some of the streets opening on the same being 2ft Gin above the road in question. It was stated that action would bo at once taken to prevent accidents. Cr. Day called attention to the state of the footpath in Goings road. Cr. White said the matter would be attended to. A statement showing the salaries paid to their officers by various municipalities, was laid on the table, by whioh it appeared that the Sydenham town clerk was in receipt of the lowest salary. After discussion, Cr. Hall gave notice of motion for next meeting, as under—" That the town clerk's salary be increased to £2OO per annum from January Ist, 1881.
