Intelligence received by the Auckland Stud Company states that Sir Hercules Robinson has bought seven choice mares in England for stud purposes from Lord Falmouth’s Middle Park stud, five being in foal to craok sires. Playing with Fire. A boy on Saturday picked up a dynamite cap and endeavoured to prick it out with a steel instrument, when it exploded, shattering his hand. Wesleyan ConferenceThe Wesleyan Conference meets at Nelson •a the 21st of Jan nary. New Reef. A discovery of an auriferous reef is reported Bear Waiwera Springs, and a ton of stone has been sent to the Thames for test. InquestAt the inqnest on the fire at Coromandel the verdict was that it was an accidental fire •aused by children playing with matches. WELLINGTON, December 14. Narrow Escape. A large boarding-house, known as York House, had a narrow escape from destruction this morning. At 4.30 a fire was discovered in an unoccupied bedroom, but was extinguished before it had got a firm hold of the building. AUCKLAND, December 18. InquestAt the inquest on the body of Alfred Leith, the victim of the Tiri Tiri accident, the jury returned a verdict of “Accidental death.” Much sympathy is felt for Captain and Mrs Leith. Charge of Sheep Stealing. B. N. Garland, a settler at Cambridge, has been committed for trial on a charge of sheepstealing. He has been admitted to bail. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 18. The Parihaka Meeting. At the Parihaka meeting, there was only a small attendance of Natives. Te Whiti’s speech was of no political significance, and, so far as can be learnt, no allusion was made to the Onunake murder. The meeting was of short duration, and the few Natives who had visited Parihaka soon dispersed. Only one or two Europeans were present. Mr Blackett. Mr Blackett proceeded to Cape Egmont to-day, for the purpose of inspecting the work of erection of the lighthouse at that place. BLENHEIM, December 19. Griffiths v Johnson. The ease of Griffiths v Johnson, for libel, which has occupied two days, terminated last night. The jury retired shortly after three o’clock, and returned at 6.15, when the foreman stated that they could not agree, and asked for refreshments. The Chief Justice granted the request, and ordered them back. At midnight, still disagreeing, they were discharged. NELSON, December 18, Address to Constituents. Mr A. S. Collins addressed the suburban electors at Richmond last night. There was a full attendance. He said that he would not pledge himself to support any men, but spoke in favor of the present Ministry, deprecating the conduct of the Grey Government. He advocated retrenchment, but said that the 10 per cent, reduction all round was but a bungling attempt to do right. He spoke warmly in favor of the Royal Commission. There was much applause during the speech, and a vote of thanks was accorded the candidate. WELLINGTON, December 18. Sale of Waimate Plains. The Government have received a telegram re the sale of the Waimate plains; 158 sections in the township of Manaia, and all the Manaia suburban sections were sold. The highest prices were for section 13, block 15, Manaia town, £B6; section 72, Manaia suburbs, £l9 5a per acre. All the Opunake town and suburban sections were sold. The highest price for Opunake town was section 11, block 32, £Bl. Departmental ChangesIt is understood that the Government do not intend to fill np the vacancy in the Civil Service vacated by the resignation of Mr Maginnity, secretary of telegraphs, but that the duties of that office anil be placed on Dr. Lemon and Mr Gray, secretary of the Postal Department. A re-arrangement will subsequently take place in the management of the Postal and Telegraphic Departments, together with some change of official designation of the chief officers, rendered necessary by the amalgamation of the two departments into one. Dr. Lemon, who is the senior officer, will be entitled “ superintendent ” and Mr Gray “ secretary ” of the Postal and Telegraphic Departments of New Zealand. Te Whiti and Tohu on the Situation. Telegrams received by the Government relative to the Parihaka meeting state that Te Whiti and Tohu, while condemning the action of the Government in selling land on the Waimate plains and surveying the Parihaka block, urge their followers to continue their course of patient forbearance and abstinence from all violence. Stopped on the Way. The trustees in the bankruptcy estate of T. 8. Wymond received a warrant to-day to have a quantity of goods shipped by the Hawes by by that firm for the South detained at Lyttelton. HOKITIKA, December 19. Mayoral Election Void. Several ratepayers petitioned the Resident Magistrate to upset the late Mayoral election, through a supplementary burgess-roll being prepared and used at the election. The case was heard and decided at the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, in favor of the petitioners. The Magistrate stated that the allegations of the petition had been sustained, and declared the election void. A fresh election is to take place. GEEYMOUTH, December 18. Mining. The return from the top plates of the Golden Fleece Extended Company, Reefton, for the week is 251 ounces of amalgam from 133 tons of stone. No. 4 level still carries 3ft. of a lode. The big blast of 3000 pounds of powder was fired yesterday evening, and was completely successful. About ten or twelve thousand tons of stone wore brought down without damage to property.
WESTPORT, December 18. Obituary. Captain Dillon, of the steamer Kennedy, died on board in the Buller roadstead to-day. TIMARU, December 18. Timaru RegattaThe regatta, which was postponed from Thursday, took place to-day. Mie weather was beautiful and the sea favourable for races. The beach was lined with spectators. Landing Service Race, 3 miles—Harbor Board Service, 1 : Timaru Service, 2 ; George street Service, 3. Time—3omin. Amateur Fouroared Race, 2k miles—Timaru Boating Club. 1 ; V. Reid’s Titanis, 2. Time—lsmin. Sculler’s Race—Duncan and Bell competed, the former winning easily. The Champion Baca of four miles, first prize £2O, second £6, was won by W. Bradley’s Zebra by nearly a mile, Collins’s Pinafore second. DUNEDIN, December 19. NamedThe man killed at Mosgiel by a blast on Friday was named Luke. Gallantry RewardedPrisoner Elwardr, who gallantly rescued a girl from drowning at Port Chalmers, ha* been pardoned. [PEOM OTTE OWN COBBBBPOHDBNT.] WELLINGTON, December 18. Te Whiti's Address. Telegrams received by Government relative to the Parihaka meeting, state that Te Whiti said be addressed his discourse “to all liars and all proper people.” This is interpreted as meeting that be speaks alike to the people outside Parihaka who deny his inspiration and to those who attend at Parihaka and follow his instructions. The former are the “ liars,” the latter “ proper people.” He did not allude to Tnhi at all, nor did Tohu either. Both spoke iu a pacific strain, hut were as obstinately adverse to settlement as ever. To Whiti is reported to ha much irritated at the continued surrey of the Parihaka block. The Murderer Tnhi. The transcription of the notes taken by the Chief Justice at the trial of the murderer Tubi did not reach Ministers until to-day. The perusal of these notes will necessarily occupy some little time, and it is not probable that the case will come before the Executive Council earlier than Tuesday next, when the regular weekly meeting takes place.
