The Irish authorities haying demanded further reinforcements, the Coldstream Guards have been despatched to Ireland and were the recipients of great demonstrations when leaving London. NEW YOEK, December 6, President Hayes has sent a message which recommends that General Ulysses Grant be appointed Commander of the United States army. LONDON, December 8. In consequence of the increasing agitation in Ireland the Government have resolved to have recourse to more strenuous measures for preserving peace than have hitherto been adopted. With this object they are now prohibiting the bolding of all meetings in connection with the Land League which are considered as likely to lead to disturbances. A meeting of this kind was projected to be held at Brookesborough, near Enniskilin, and the local authorities interfered and prohibited it. Large numbers of the disaffected then assembled in the' streets of the town, and were summoned to disperse. They refused to do so, and as there was on the spot a strong body of police, which had been previously reinforced by the military, the Biot Act was read. The crowd refused to separate, and exhibited a threatening dememor. The constables and dragoons then charged the people, whom they speedily and completely diape! a A numberof arrests were made.
