POPULAR SPORTS COMMITTEE.

The adjourned meeting of the above van held at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present— Messrs S. F. Andrews (in the chair), Alport, J. Q. Walker, Hobbs, F. Davie, E. C. Bishop, Farr, Oogan, Samuels, Jacobsen, Bickerton, Hebden, Haskins. A letter was read from Mr F. 0. Hull, acknowledging vote of thanks, and stating that he would like to see any money voted to him pat to the credit of the subscription fund. Messrs Andrews and Jacobsen were appointed referees for the day. Mr J. Q. Walker was appointed on (the juvenile fete committee. Mr Hebden pointed out that it was a disgrace to the district that the support aocorded by the public by the contributions at the gate was so small. Last year the amount received was £75 whilst the Foresters, only charging a email sum for admission, received £2OO. The people must be brought face to face with this fact, that if they did not contribute more liberally the sports must cease. He would move that a placard be printed appealing to the public to give their contributions for the support of the sports, or, if they did not, then the sports would fall through. Mr Davie supported the motion. Mr Bishop moved, as an amend* ment, that a short placard be printed asking the public to subscribe liberally towards the sports. Mr Hebden withdrew his motion, and Mr Bishop’s amendment was carried, and Messrs Bishop and Hebden appointed to have placards printed, and stuck in prominent places in the city. After the transaction of some further routine business the committee adjourned.
