SYDENHAM AMATEUR MUSICAL SOCIETY.

This sooiety gave their final concert of the season last evening in the Wesle/an Cburoh, Colombo road, and, musically speaking, it was a decided success. Owing to the strides made by the members of the society since its formation, it was thought advisable, as a fitting close to the season, to deviate a little from the ordinary routine of their conoorts and introduce a higher class of music, the reeult of which was that copies of a sacred cantata entitled "Nativity," were procured from homo for production, and, judging from its success last evening, it was a step in the right direction. The numerical strength of the aociety was considerably augmented by a portion of the Wesleyan choir and various members of the Orchestral Bocioty, under the leadership of Mr A. Landergan. The cantata comprises some very goad choruses, &c, tho instrumental portion tlso being «ood. The choruses, " To God in the highest," " We go by angels bidden," and "O, come all ye faithful," were ■well ronderod; tee quartettes, "As a fair dream " and " Witt weary weeks of travel," were given with much precision. Mr Fox gave a good rendering of the solo " O, be not | afraid," whilst the dart; by Mesdames Gray and Edmonds was a musical treat, much approbation being accorded. The second portion of the programme consisted of selections from the "Messiah," the best items being "Comfort ye" and "Every valley," "The people that walked in darkness," "He was despised," and the "Hallelujah" chorus. Mr J. H. Edmonda conducted with hia usual ■ability.
