KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr Blackwell), Ora. Moore, Pinching, May, Smith, Fraser, Woodford, Mathews, Monk, and Stanton. Letters were read— From Colonial Secretary, acknowledging receipt of intimation that Mr G. H. Blackwell had been re-elected Mayor ; also forwarding voucher for £3 ss, Court fines. From poundkeeper, applying to have a well put down at the pound. Consideration deferred till next meeting. The Town Clerk reported that contract for metalling Charles street had been finished. The contract for painting Council’s property was progressing favorably. A letter was read from Saunders Brothers, asking for a reduction of rent of reserve at Ashburton. Consideration was deferred. The lighting committee recommended an increase to the salary of the attendant of £5 a year. To light the swing bridge better than at present it would require an additional lamp in the centre, costing £5. The committee could not recommend that any lamps bo done away with, as the cost was only BJd per lamp per night. The report was adopted, except in reference to the third lamp at the bridge. The receipts for the fortnight wore £5 10s ; present credit balance £49 12s 8d; accounts £4l 17s 5d were passed. The Fire Brigade committee reported that Mr Hempleman would find horses for the steam fire engine for £ls per annum, and £1 for each fire. It was agreed that £2 be paid by the Council to anyone finding the first pair of horses in case of fire. A sum of £5 was voted towards the Fire Brigade demonstration. Or. Woodford moved, and Or. Smith seconded—“ That the Council abolish the works committee, and the clerk be appointed to carry out the works at a salary to be agreed upon.” Ors. Fraser and Moore, and the Mayor opposed the motion. A motion to change the time of meetings from 7.30 to 8 p.m., was negatived. Cr. Smith moved, Or. Pinching seconded— ‘* That the resolution of October 25th, to the effect that the North road footpath be formed of concrete, be rescinded.” This was carried, Ors. Moore, Fraser and the Mayor opposing it. A committee of Ors. Monk, Woodford, and Smith, the latter to be chairman, was appointed to draw up a schedule of the surveyor’s duties and suggest the amount of salary. The Council then adjourned.
