LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present—The Mayor (in tb« chair), Councillors Macdonald, Hawkins, Heed, Webb, Grubb, Weyburne, and Smith. Leave of absence was granted to Or. Garforth. The receipts since the previous meeting were £lB2 6s. Correspondence was read from the Colonial Secretary’s Office, asking for particulars of the account of charitable aid disbursed by the Borough, amounting to £175 14s 9d, 50 per cent, of which, if correct, would be refunded by Government. Mr Maxwell, railway manager, wrote, asking that the plans of the siding required be sent to him. Or. Hawkins said that already the construction of a £2OOO building depended upon whether a siding would or would not be available. The plan it was decided to send immediately the surveyor could get it ready. The Town Clerk at the Thames wrote for particulars of income and expenses, with details of salaries paid, by the borough. He forwarded a similar letter of particulars, showing these data at the Thames. The Mayor said the request had been complied with, and about thirty municipalities had been written to for such information, with a view to seeing how they compared with the expenses of this borough. Accounts amounting to £126 8s 6i were passed for payment. The £IOO honorarium for last year’s services of the Mayor was passed for payment. It was resolved to ask the estates committee to go up and inspect Council’s reserve on the Ashburton Porks railway line. An application from Mrs Warne for permission to erect a verandah on Oxford street was granted, subject to the usual conditions. The report from the pumping station showed that the consumption of water was 60,000 gallons on week days and 20,000 on Sundays. The engineer stated that the high-level pump made by Messrs Scott Bros, was working admirably. The last pumping showed 48,000 gallons in ten hours’ work, or 4800 gallons per hour. It was resolved, ou the motion of Cr. Bead, that the foreman of works should ascertain the cost to take the water to the top of Yoelas road. Tfaa report of the foreman of works was read. The Council adjourned, to meet at noon on the 15th instant for the installation of the Mayor.
