THE LATE TRAMWAY ACCIDENT.
Dr. Coward, the District Coroner, held an inquest on Wednesday, at Papanui, touching the death of Mr John Greenaway, who met with his death on the Papanui branch of the street tramway, on Tuesday last. The witnesses examined were B. H. Hankins, Bobt. Wood, Thos. Hickson (the guard), Ohas. Hull, and Dr. Byrnes. The evidence went to show that the deceased got on the 5.15 tram and, shortly after ascending the platform, he to pass from one car to the other, in doing which he fell, and the wheels passed over him. It was also shown that Mr Greenaway got on the tram whilst it was in motion, but the accident occurred os already stated. Mr J. E. Brown, who was present as the representative of the Tramway Company, stated that the omission to report to the police was an oversight, but, at the same time, pointed out that the company were not bound to report to the police on such occasions. It was the duty of the company to report to the Colonial Secretary, and this had been done by telegraph. He also mentioned that he had on more than one occasion warned the deceased about getting on the tram when it was in motion. The Jury returned a verdict of " Accidental )eath.”
