THE NEW BROADWAY MARKET.
It is proposed to erect a general market for the convenience of residents in South Christchurch, Sydenham, Waltham, and Addington, on the block of laud situated at the corner of Colombo street and the South town belt. The land has been plotted off into sixty ollotmenta, each 15ft, by 36ft., on which buildings of a uniform character will be erected. The tenants of each lot will pay a weekly rental of from 7s 6d to 12s, according to position. A roadway, 28ft. in width, will run from the entrance from Colombo street, which will be intersected by one of a similar width from the South belt. The promoters of the scheme, Messrs F. B. Lloyd and Co., are making arrangements with the Railway authorities to extend their railway siding to the market, enabling farmers and others sending produce from the country to give delivery from the railway trucks into the stores of the different vendors in the market. Every care will be taken to ensure cleanliness by the erection of two huge dust bins at the rear of the market, into which the refuse will be deposited day by day, and as frequently carted away. Every attention will be paid to water supply ; a large bore artesian well, with tank and plenty of buckets being arranged for. Although the scheme has so recently been broached, more than one-third of the sections have already been applied for, and the work of construction will in all probability be commenced during the ensuing week. The name given by the promoters to the market is the New Broadway Market, and considering the numerous population of the districts it s intended to servo, it bids fair to enjoy a fair share of public support.
