FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE TRAMWAY.
A melancholy aocident, resulting in the death of an old and much respected resident of Christchurch, occurred on the tramway in the neighborhood of Papanui yesterday afternoon. The train, consisting of the engine and two cars, was proceeding along the Papanui road, when Mr John Greenaway, a passenger, seeing an acquaintance whom he wished to speak with, endeavored to pass from his own to the other car, and in doing so fell between them, and sustained serious injury, his thighs being severely crushed, and, it was said, one leg broken. The train was immediately stopped, and Mr Greenaway extricated from his painful position. Ho was conscious, but evidently suffering great pain, and ho complained of difficulty in breathing. The unfortunate gentleman expired a few moments afterwards. An inquest will be held on the body at two o’clock this afternoon. The sad occurrence created a very painful sensation in town last evening, the deceased being so well-known in Christchurch, and the news of his untimely death spread with astonishing rapidity. Mr Greenaway, as most old residents of Christchurch know, was a nurseryman, and for many years secretary of the Christchurch Horticultural Society. He always took a groat interest in floriculture, and was himself a most successful gardener. The deceased had many friends, was highly respected by all who knew him, and his sudden death will be very generally regretted.
