Before reaching Inglewood the tires of the engine broke, and in that dangerous condition it had to come on to Sentry hill. It is expected that if new engines are not sent, the line will have to be closed. Complaints are loud, as no dependonce can be placed by persons as to reaching their destination according to the time-table. QRAHAMBTOWN, November 25. Opening of the Te Aroha GoldfieldA “Star” pigeongram states that the Te Aroha goldfield was opened by Mr Eenrick at nine this morning, by reading the proclamation. Guns were fired as he said “ God save the Queen,” and the 300 men who had assembled on the prospectors’ claim commenced pegging out, there being ne quarrelling. Immediately after the pegging out, the Warden took down the names and inspected the miners’ rights. The Mclntyres have got the cap of the reef on their ground, but it will be difficult to tell who will get it, as the following have claims :—Oornes, Murphy, Wickham and Whitaker, Buben Parr, Ferguson and Mclntyre, and B. A False ClaimTho claim of Mr Solomon, AttorneyGeneral of Fiji, to several sections in Napier, as reported some time back, has engaged all the lawyers here, either for or against. The investigation shows that Mr Solomon conveyed the land twenty-one years ago to Mr Shcddon. The owners of the section have been, consequently, put to considerable expense for nothing. AUCKLAND, November 25. The Governor’s Movements. The Governor leaves for Wellington in the Hinemoa at 2 p.m. to-morrow. He expects

to arrive in Wellington at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The tide prevents his leaving the Manuka* earlier to-morrow. Native Lands. A proclamation isaued re the Fatetere land appoints a sitting of the Land Court at Cam* bridge on January 25th, at which one block of 240,000 sores will be adjudicated on. The Court will also deal with lands at Hokiangs, Whangarei, Thames, Taupo, Bay of Plenty, Tologa Bay, Otaki, Wanganui and Patea. The Government have scheduled blocks of about a million acres in area, with regard to which they will proceed under the Native Lands Act 1877, in order to set aside land equivalent to the Government advances from the date of the order of the Court. The remainder of the lands will be opened to pnblio competition. Native Threats, The chiefs of the Hanaiora, Ngatimaniopoto and Tengakan tribes were present daring the expulsion of the ploughmen from Mr Tale’s land at Ngamoko, but did not interfere. The Natives now threaten depredations on Mr McLean’s land. WELLINGTON, November 25. Bathing AccidentA young man named Hartry met with a serious accident last night. He jumped off a spring board at the baths and struck his head on the bottom. He was taken to the Hospital, and lies there in a precarious condition. Alleged Smuggling. A charge has been laid against the captain and steward of the ship Wairoa for alleged smuggling of a quantity of tobacco and cigars. The case will be beard this afternoon. KUMAEA, November 25. Mayoral Election. There is great excitement over the Mayoralty election, O'Hagan was returned by a large majority. DUNEDIN, November 25. A deputation from Port Chalmers waited on Mr Oliver yesterday, re the stoppage of the railway workshops at Port Chalmers. Mr Oliver replied that, owing to various causes, the works were at present carried on at a dead loss. Recently, some work was done there for 2id per lb, for which 4Jd had been offered, and in another case—the Albion’s shaft—sJd was charged, when 10id had been paid in Melbourne for the same work. The Government ought at once seriously to consider the advisability of leasing the workshops. Mr Macandrew, who was present, agreed with Mr Oliver’s suggestion. Deferred Payment Selectors. As the Oamaru train due in town at 12.45 to-day was nearing the Fort Chalmers quarry, a heavy blast was fired, which dislodged a lump of stone estimated at somewhere about 10 tons. This mass came rolling down on to the line, tearing up some at the rails and sleepers. A quarry man had just time to give warning to the approaching train of the danger ahead. If the train had been two minutes in advance of its time the stone would probably have descended on to the top of it. After a detention of an hour and a half, the line was cleared, and the train pro* Deeded to Dunedin, the passengers having walked to the lower station.
