POPULAR SPORTS.

A meeting of the above was held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the City Council Chamber. Fresent—Messrs S. F. Andrews, Alport, Frank Hobbs, Walkden, Crooks, and Haskins. Mr Andrews occupied the chair. A letter was read from Mr Waohsman, stating that he had seen Messrs Coates and Co. and Mr Sandstein with reference to their giving prizes for the coming sports, and that they had intimated their willingness to do so. Mr Hobbs apologised for the absence of Mr W. 9. King and other* Oh account of business engagements. Mr Andrews brought up the report of the programme committee, submitting a draft programme for adoption. _ They had reduced some of the prizes, but in doing so they felt that this would not detract from the attractiveness of the race. Mr Andrews then gave a description of the alterations made by the committee in last year’s programme. These reductions would save £23 odd. They proposed giving a bicycle race of two miles, and in place of a champion prize to the highest they proposed giving a champion prize for one mile bicycle race, open to all comers, to be run in heats, the first prize in which should be £4. Messrs W. E. Warner, E. 0. Farr, and W. E. Samuels were proposed as members of the committee for election at next meeting. Mr Walkden brought up the report of the ground committee, which was brief but comprehensive. Mr Walkden was requested to bring up a further report on Friday next. The chairman said the question now came, looking at the small attendance that day, whether they were warranted in going on with the sports. Mr Haskins thought it was not right that the gentlemen who never came near them at the meetings should only come to the sports on the morning they were held, when they were rather a hindrance than otherwise. Mr Walkden thought they should let the matter stand over till next Friday. If there was not a larger attendance of the committee at the meeting on Friday, then the sports should be abandoned. Mr Haskins moved—“ That the question of carrying out the sports should be remitted until next Friday, and that then unless there is a fair attendance of members of committee at that meeting, the sports be abandoned,” Mr Walkden seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The meeting then adjourned until Friday next, at 4 p.m.
