The stewards of the Ashburton Race Meeting held on Wednesday were more fortunate in their weather than their Agricultural Show confreres of the preceding day, for the day, though very hot, was very pleasant. The attendance was capital, the grand stand being orowded, and the sport was very good. The catering was entrusted to Mrs Butler and Mr McZenzie. The usual games were to the fore and Mr Le Sueur appeared to run his Pari Mutuel with much sucoess. Mr Neil McLean was very successful in his starting, and Mr Carter, on old Albatross and in the most orthodox pink, made a capital clerk of the course. For the open Hurdle Race four went to the post, Lone Hand being a very strong favorite, but the supposed certainty was upset by Levant, who was allowed to get away with such a lead that they oould never catch her. The other two engaged came more or less to grief. The District Hurdle Race brought out a field of four, and was won pretty easily by Raven. The Ashburton Cup was virtually a walk over for Lara, the only other starter, Holdernesse, cutting it shortly after the start. The Ladies' Purse brought out a field of five, Zulu being a strong favorite. He was, however, never really in the hunt, Minnie winning from end to end. Details are appended : Handicap Htjbdli: Rack, of 50 sovs- Distance, two miles, over eight flights of abont 3ft Cin high hurdles. Mr Barrett's br m Levant, 6yrs, lOst 101 b (Mr Cullen) 1 Mr J. H. Betting 6 to 4 on Lone Hand. On the fall of the flag the four candidates walked away together, each waiting on the other. Levant wbb the firßt to draw away, and took the first hurdle a long way ahead of the others, who now came at it almost together. Lonehand was next over, followed by Topthorno and Milo. They ran thus past the stand, and nearly to the back of the course. Here Topthorne fell, throwing his rider, and Milo ran off the course. Meantime Levant had retained such a strong lead that in spite of all Mr Lunn's exertions he never got near her. Levant, who jumped for the most part in good form, won easily. As they came to the second obstacle Lone Hand and Merlin went to the front, but both refused, Raven again assuming a strong lead, Mungo Park lying second. At the fence at the back of the course Mungo Park fell. Raven was now well ahead, Merlin and Lone Hand, who had been making up lost ground, lying second and third. From this out the race was never in doubt, Raven, who was well ridden by T Lyford, winning easily ; Lone Hand beating Merlin half a length for second place.
