Redwood’s br f Miss Domett, 3 yrs, 6st 61b (Blanch) 0 Badsworth was scratched. Betting—Even money Billingsgate; 3 to 2 Natator. There was some considerable delay at the post, owing to the fractiousuess of little Betrayer, who first broke away, and then refused for some time to face the flag. Finally Mr Campbell got the lot fairly off together. When they had settled to their work Natator was the first to show in front, with Billingsgate in close attendance and Maritana well up, the rest in a cluster a length or so behind. They ran almost in this order to the turn, where Maritana fell back beaten, and Billingsgate assumed a slight load, Betrayer coming fast. It was a good race up the straight between the favorite and Natator, but half way up the rails the former came on and won by about two lengths. Betrayer was third and Libeller fourth. Miss "Domett got rather the worst of the start, and never showed prominently in the race. Time, Imin, 44ieci. The Selling Hack Race produced a field of six, and, after a false start, in which three of the competitors broke away and went once round on their own account, the lot got away well. The winner turned up in Mr Franks’
chesnut mare Mischief. She was put up by auction by Mr Campbell at the finish of the race, but not realising anything above the upP r .* ce waa re turned to her owner. Ibis brought a capital day’s racing to a conclusion.
Third Day—Friday
The third day of the races is generally regarded ns a kind of oil day, partaking, after the excitement of the Cup, somewhat of the style of champagne with the sparkle gone. The attendance to-day was small, but those who wore present seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. Sport commenced with the Christchurch Plate, for which only Le Loup, Foul Play, and The Governor were starters, On Dit and Lure being absentees. The Cup winner placed this race to the credit of Mr Fraser, scoring his third win of the meeting easily. There was no betting, as it was thought that the weight he had to carry could not stop him. The result proved the soundness of this conclusion. The Christchurch Plate, a sweepstakes of 5 bovs each, with 150 sova. added; second horse to save his ctake. The winner of the Canterbury Cup to carry 71b; the winner of the Derby, 51b; and of both races, 101 b penalty. Maidens at starting allowed—for 3 yrs. 51b ; 4 yra, 101 b; 5 yrs and upwards, 141 b. Once round and a distance. Mr G. Fraser’s ch h Le Loup, 6 yra, 9at 121 b ( Wattie) 1 Hon. W. Robinson’s br h Foul Play, 6 yrs, 9at 51b (Derritt) 2 Mr H. Horsford’a ch c The Governor, 3 yra, 7st 41b (Webster) 3 After a little trouble, owing to Le Loup proving slightly reckless, Mr Campbell sent the trio away to a fair start, of which the Governor had the worst. Foul Play made the running past the stand, with the Governor in close attendance, Le Loup about two lengths behind. The Governor passing Redwood’s gate ran neck and neck with Foul Play at a good pace to Ford’s, when Le Loup, who had been lying third, came up. Here it was seen that the Crisis Lodge representative had had enough of it, and Le Loup at the time get on terms with Mr Robinson’s colt. Coming down the straight Foul Play waa in trouble, Derrett giving a little gentle persuasion with the whip. Le Loup came on full of running, Wattie making a nice race of it from the rails to the post, Le Loup winning by two lengths very comfortably, The Governor finishing three lengths behind Foul Play. Time—3min 3Jsecs. For the Metropolitan Handicap no less than eleven starters fronted Mr Campbell, Foul Play and The Governor, after their Christchurch running, being scratched. Betrayer was fancied by some, though Sir Modred and Norseman had a following. The winner turned up in the Bon. W. Robinson’s handsome colt Natator, this being the first win of the meeting for the stable. The Metropolitan Handicap, a sweepstakes of 5 sova each, with 150 bovs added. Second horse to save bis stake. One mile and a-balf. Hon, W. Robinson’s ch h Natator, 5 yra, 7at 121 b (Derritt) 1 Hon. B. Campbell’s b c Sir Modred, 3 yrs, 7st 61b ... ... ... ... George’s b h Atlantic, 5 yrs, 6st 0 Mr J. Shaw’s ch c Adamant, 4 yra, 6st 61b 0 Mr H. C. Adams’ b c Kosciusko, 4 yrs, 6at 0 Mr Campbell bad some difficulty in getting the lot started, as he bad to send them away from the front of the stand. After one or two efforts, however, he took a favorable opportunity and despatched the eleven. Luna, Sir George and Sir Modred were the first two to show in front in the order given, with Natator leading the rear division, next to him being Volunteer, Norseman, Atlantic, and Adamant, the Polish hero occupying a distinguished position in rear. Luna led the lot a merry dance to the far eide of the course, Sir Geogre and Sir Modred being her immediate attendants, with Natator fourth, Norseman fifth, and Betrayer sixth. Coming to the turn Atlantic began to come up, Luna evidently having had enough of it, the rest made their effort here, and sweeping round into the straight, it looked anyone’s race. Natator, however, at the rails came away with Betrayer, Luna and Sir Modred close up. Here all except the leader were in distress, and the whips were going freely. The Hon. W. Robinson’s colt would not be denied, and won comfortably by two lengths, Sir Modred being shaken up into second place, Luna third three lengths off, and Betrayer fom-th, the rest tailing off. Time—2min, 41-Jsecs. For the Nursery Handicap, four came out, of which Hinemoa and Amulet were the favorites. Hinemoa was made a warm favorite on the totalisator, but the event proved that this prediction was wrong, as Mr Matthews’ colt. Amulet, came away an easy winner. The Spring Nursery Handicap, of 100 bovs. for the winner. The sweepstakes of 5 sova. to go to the second horse. For two-year-olds. Four furlongs. Mr F. Matthews’ ch c Amnlet, Bst 131 b i(Nolan) 1 Mr G. Fraser’s b f Hinemoa, 9at (Wattiel 2 Mr H. Hereford's ch g Nonpareil, Sat 101 b (Clark) 3 Mr H. Redwood’s b c Flapjack, Bit 131 b (Thompson) 0 After several false starts, in which the colors of Amulet and Hinemoa were conspicuous, the four were sent away, Hinemoa and Amulet cutting out the work at a warm pace, Nonpariel and Flapjack running in the order named. At the turn into the straight Amulet it was evident had the race well in hand, Hinemoa running second but in distress. Coming near the rails Nonpareil made an effort, but was unable to stay, and fell back, Hinemoa being second. Amulet could not be reached, and won after a good race by two lengths, Nonpareil a bad third, Flapjack last. Time—s2Jseoa. For the Selling Plate six saddled up, and of these Lara, despite his impost of 9st, as compared with the rest, was made a warm favorite. Joker, who won the Hack race on the first day, had some friends, but the majority was in favor of Lara. The Selling Plate Handicap, of 50 sova. To be ridden by lads who have never won a race of the value of 25 sova. Any horse, excepting the winner, may be claimed for 200 sova. (Thompson) 0 Mr Westmaeott’s b £ Hilda, 3 yrs... (Ward) 0 After one or two false starts the lot were sent away to a very straggling start, Lara, Tera, and Laertes getting all the best of it, Joker and Hilda narrowly escaping being left at the post. Joker went through his horses at a most tremendous rate, catching them before the turn, and leading into the straight. Here, however, he gave way to Lara, who with Tera now came up, and assumed charge of affairs, Joker lying third, Laertes fourth. In this order they ran to the post, Lara winning by a good length, Laertes coming with a rush and getting second place from Tera, who ran well, Joker fourth. Time—lmin. 19secs. The Flying Handicap, of 100 sovs. for the winner, the sweepstakes, of 3 sovs. each, to go to the second horso. For three-year-olds and upwards. Six furlongs. Mr P.
