EXPORT OF WELLINGTON BUTTER.
Dairy farmers in tho Wellington country districts (says tho “ New Zealand Times ”) are loud in their complaints that the price obtained locally for butter does not pay them fairly to make it. It is satisfactory, therefore, to find that the experiment is about to be tried of sending a shipment of the finest New Zealand butter to London, in order to ascertain what it will fetch in that market. Mr H. F. Logan, grocer, of Thorndon, has recently had packed in hermetically sealed tins a large quantity of butter of the very finest quality. The butter is very slightly salted—so slightly, indeed, as to make the salt flavour scarcely perceptible—the butter being what Scotch folks term “ powdered ” butter. The tins hold quantities of from 21b. to 61b. each. It is thought the butter will keep well during the voyage, and be landed in good condition. Tho price paid to the producer of the butter averages 5d per lb., which the tinning and freight to London will bring up to 7d per lb. In Messrs Morton’s London wholesale price list of provisions, tinned butter is quoted at from Is 2d to 2s Id per lb., according to quality. If, therefore, Wellington butter can be landed in London in first-rate order for 7d per lb., tho profits to the New Zealand exporter, at the high scale of prices ruling at Home, should be a very satisfactory one.
