LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of this Council was held on Monday night. Present—The Mayor (chairman), Org. Hawkins, Eeed, Garforth, Webb, Gmbb, Weyburn, Maodonald, Maopherson, Tho reoeipts since the previous meeting were £196 4s 6d. Mr A. M. John■on wrote saying he had put the trout in the reservoir, and had sent an account for same •mounting to £2 10s, subject to the option of taking the fish out when the reservoir is emptied. Applications for monthly water accounts from Messrs P. Cunningham and Co. and Edwards, Bennett and Co. wero allowed. Mr J. E. Willcox applied for the position of borough valuer, rendered vacant by the death of his father. Or. Weyburn moved and Or. Macphetson seconded that ho be appointed. Or. Webb thought the position should be advertised. Or. Hawkins said that he had some in contact with the applicant in connection with the property tax, and he had found him more conversant with the details of the work than the late Mr J. 8. Willcox. Or. Webb declined to move an amendment, atating that the time before which the valuation had to be made would not, perhaps, admit of it. Mr J. B. Willcox was then duly appointed. Mr J. E. Willcox wrote further, asking that if, in the event of his taking out an auctioneer's license, the OoHncil could see its way to refund tho sum representing the unexpired term on the license held by his late father. The matter was left in abeyance -until the solicitor's opinion be obtained as to whether the Council had the power to comply. Mr Haider, the borough solicitor, wrote with reference to the power of the Council to cut down the streets to certain levels, that Oounoil had the power to cut down to fixed levels. The deed for the site for the new police barracks to be put up by the Government was laid on the table, and it was resolved that the Mayor's signature be affixed to it. _ Leave of absence was granted to Or. Smith. A number of residents in the locality petitioned the Council to take over and form Dudley road. Council could not afford to comply with the request. A list of outstanding rates was laid on the table, amounting to £ls odd. Accounts amounting to £lO5 17s 9d were passed for payment. It was agreed to call for tenders for an invert to be put in between Exeter and Eipon streets. Or. Webb aßked with reference to the drain at the top of Bait's Gully. Tho Mayor said the work would cost £BOO, and it would have to stand until the Council had sufficient money to go on with it. The report of the foreman of works was read. He stated that some of the tanks in the upper part of the town had been damaged by larrikins, and several lamps broien. The polioe had been informed of the depredations. A sum of £lO was granted in aid of the Eire Brigade Station. Mr Fred. Ward was appointed auditor for the borough vice the late Mr J. S. Willcox. It was resolved that Dr. Eouse be asked to send in a monthly acoount of tho patients ho attends, in connection with his Balary of £SO por annum from the Council. Or. Grubb asked whether copies of the Municipal Act were not obtainable for the use of Councillors. The Mayor said he would try and got a few. The minutes were read, after which the following notices of motion were given : —By Or. Maopherson—- " That the honorarium to the Mayor for the ensuing year be £IOO j" by Or. Reed—" That it be discontinued."
