DEDICATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DARFIELD.
This church, erected by the Catholics of the district, was opened and dedicated on Sunday last, October 31»t, by the Bev. Father Ohervier, of New Hcadford, near Lincoln. The site for the church consists of two acres of land, the gift of Mr Maxwell, of Racecourse Hill, who has also given a handsome subscription towards the building fund. The church is constructed of timber, on a concrete foundation. The style is Gothic. It consists of a nave 30ft. by 18£t., -with a sanctuary 12ft. by 10ft. The western end is relieved by a large three-light window, together with two large windows on each side of the nave. The building has a substantial open roof, the principals strengthened with brackets to resist the high winds. It is entered by two porches, one on either side. The building is lined throughout with dado 4ft. high. The sanctuary is separated by a suitable arch in keeping with the design followed. The church is neatly furnished and comfortably seated, and reflects great credit on all concerned. The contractor is Mr Buxton, of Christchurch, who has erected the building under the superintendence of Mr T. B. Jacobsen, of Hereford street. The solemn dedication commenced at 11 o’clock ; after which ceremony High Mass was celebrated by the Eev. Father Ohervier. Welles’ Mass in G was effectively rendered by Mr John Pope, of the Catholic Choir, Lyttelton, assisted by a number of the juveniles from the Catholic School, New Headford, Lincoln, jlfter the Gospel, the rev. gentleman preached on effective sermon, concluding fay oangratulating the numerous congregation on the success attending their efforts in the completion of their new church. Ho asked them to subscribe liberally towards the liquidation of a small debt remaining on the church, an appeal which was liberally responded to, Tho weather was all that could be wished. Mr Clinton erected a large tent within tho church grounds for tho accommodation of visitors from a distance, and provided a substantial luncheon, which was taken advantage of by ■naqj who were a distance from their homeei
