MASTERTON, November 1. The train arrived here at 1.45 p.m. Masterton presented a very gay appearance. The train was met by about 2000 persons, and a procession was formed at the railway station and marohed to the town, headed by the Masterton band. The procession consisted of the Fire Brigade and the following friendly societies —Foresters, Oddfellows, Good Templars, Shepherds and Juvenile Foresters, and also the school children. The Mayor read a
congratulatory address. At the banquet this afternoon to celebrate the opening of the railway the Mayor occupied the chair, and the Hon. Major Atkinson, Hon. Mr Rolleston, and tho Mayor of Wellington, were jirssent. Major Atkinson, replying to a toast, said that tbeir duty of carrying out retrenchment was unpleasant, but the Government would not shriek from it whatever might be the consequences. He regretted that they were not called on to celebrate the completion of the last mile connecting Wellington with Napier and Wanganui, but he was quite certain, from our present flna cial position, that they must pause before going any further. If the present policy, however, was carriel out the colony could easily meet all its engagements. Mr R.dle ston followed in a similar strain, and said that there was a feeling throughout the ool';ny in favor of thrift and industry, and that "this was no time to launoh new echemes or speculations. They wanted land opened for settlement and industry, and the lauds of the colony were capable of settling millions, whereas there were only thousands on them. He was very hopeful of the future of the colony. Several gentlemen followed, speaking of the great benefit tho district would derive from the establishment of railway communication with Welling "n
