Addressing a builders' picnic the Premier declared that the claim advanced for remission of interest for selectors' balances was outside the range of reasonable discussion, unless burglary were within the said range. It is stated there will be a now Parliament in a month or a few weeks. Private letters from Lord Carnarvon intimate his hope to visit the colonies. The Education Department is now serving notices on parents for neglecting to send their children to school. MELBOURNE, October 28. The Duke of Manchester will be banqueted in the Town Hall to-morrow. The Mayor presides. Both the " Argus" and the "Age" strongly attack Mr Berry for billeting his sons. Up to the 27th inclusive 94,549 persons, inoluding season tioket holders, paid for admission to the Exhibition.
In the Assembly on the evening of the I 26th, the Treasurer delivered the financial statement, occupying over two hours. It was not considered a happy effort. It was too colloquial, and entered too much into detail. The following night Sir B. O'Loughlin submitted as a point of order that the estimates before the Assembly are illegal, and ought to be removed. He said the Civil Servioe Act provides a speoial approximate, so far that salaries can only be touohed by an amending Aot or by a message from the Governor recommending anew scale—a mere " Gazette " notice is insufficient. Mr Bieferd and the Ex-Attorney-General concurred, and said the Appropriation Act cannot be made to repeat another Aot. The Speaker objeoted to being taken by surprise. Sir B. O'Loughlin gave aotioe that he would formally bring the matter forward in going into Committee of Supply. ADELAIDE, October 28. In the Assembly, on the 26 h, it was stated that Mr Boothley, 0.M.G., Under Secretary, had been dismissed by the Governor, with the advice of the Ministers, for irregularities, chiefly in connection with his expenses as Executive Commissioner at the Paris Exhibition. There were five charges in all, all serious from an official point of view, but not amounting to oriminal acts. A considerable display of feeling was shown in the Assembly on the 27th, in consequence of its being understood that the Governor had been advised not tt assent to a Bill for the extension of the jurisdiction of local Courts, because it gave no right of appeal to the Privy Council in cases where £SOO was involved. Great displeasure was expressed at the conduct of the Governor, and a motion for the suspension of the Standing Orders was carried by a majority of fourteen, but this not being an absolute majority, the motion waa declared lost. They then threatened not to proceed with business, whereupon the Government offered to compromise. BRISBANE, October 28. With regard to Bailway Companies, a preliminary BUI was passed through committee with considerable amendments, and has been read a third time. With regard to Treasury Bills, a Bill has passed its second reading. The amount of issue is to be £252,525, and the Bill subsequently passed through committee. The Premier stated there was no intention of placing a loan on the market at the present time. Governor Kennedy is expected to arrive very shortly. At Logan farmers are going in for cotton planting this year.
[Far s.s. Rotorua, at the Bluff..] SYDNEY, Ojtober 26. It is generally understood that Parliament will be dissolved in the first week in November. Electoral activity is daily in* creasing. The Cricket Association are considering the desirability of a combined eleven from New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania to meet the Australian eleven. A committee has been appointed. Government has been advised that Earl Carnarvon, formerly Seoretary of State, contemplates visiting the colonies. The date is not stated. There is a great rush of passengers by sea and land to Melbourne. The steamers are crowded, and Oobb and 00. book 120 passengers daily. ADELAIDE, October 26. The work of floating the Sorata is rapidly progressing. Bags of clay are being fixed along the bottom, these being planked over. It is that an attempt will be made to float the vessel in a few days.
