The Council mot on Monday night. Pre■sent —The Mayor (chairman), Crs. Garforth, Smith, Webb, Wcyhurn, Reed, Grubb. The receipts since the previous meeting wore £35 18s 2d. A letter was road from the Public Worts Office, stating that the conveyance of the land from ihe Council was in Mr Austin’s hands ; when completed the £250 would be paid. In reply to an enquiry of the Council from Government whether the Resident Magistrate would become a resident in Lyttelton as had been promised, a letter was read from the Government enclosing correspondence from Mr Bee wick, dated May 8 th, 1880, stating that he would take up hie residence in port ?Jay 10th. The Mayor said the reply was but an evasion, and a further letter had since been sent to the Government. Pending a reply to that further action was postponed. Correspondence was read with reference to employing prison labor after the Ist November at the rates proposed by Government, viz., 6i for artisans and mechanics and 4s 6d for laborers. A resolution was carried that the Council regretted it conld not employ them. The gooler wrote that with reference to widening Dampier’s Bay road, a party of prisoners would be available to complete that work. This was considered satisfactory, and the request for tools_ was complied with. The Manager of Railways wrote asking for further information with reference to a site for a box to put the water hose in on the reclaimed land. All that the Council wanted was a site for a small box, and for this the Council did not consider any lease necessary. Correspondence was read -from the Public Works Office as to getting a siding to the Council’s reserve at the base of the Gladstone Pier. The application of the Council for a siding Government would consider. A letter asking for water accounts to be rendered to the New Zealand Shipping Company monthly was ordered to be o implied with. A request from the Land Sports Committee for the use of London street on New Year’s Day was granted, subject to the usual conditions. A signboard over A. M’Donald’s stable formed the subject of considerable discussion, but the application to erect it was finally carried by four to two votes. Accounts amounting to £94 9s 7d were passed for pay-'-ment. The lighting committee reported adversely upon putting up a light at Mrs Leslie’s corner. Report adopted. The foreman of works re waterworks, reported that the cost of connecting the extra wells was £74. The additional wells had proved a material gain to the supply. The Mayor said fifty trout wore to be put in the reservoir on Wednesday, and some salmon by Mr Johnson. At the suggestion of the Mayor, it was agreed to let the Fire Brigade have the late “Herald ” printing office for an engine bouse and meeting house.
