CITY COUNCIL.

The Connell met at seven o’clock last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Ora, Ayers, Lambert, Hulbert, Cherrill, Taylor, Vincent, Bishop, Gapes. The Mayor reported the credit balance at the bonk, £lß2l 9s 2d. The accounts for the week were as follows : —Receipts on general account, £414 16s 7 J ; drainage rate, £22 3s lOd; Drainage Board rate, £77 13s sd. Bills to be paid. Credit at bank, £lß2l 9s 2d. The accounts were duly passed. The Mayor said he proposed asking the Council to adjourn, say at half-past seven, in order to enable the councillors to attend Mr Proctor’s lecture.

The councillors generally approved of the suggestion. Ki» Worship then reported what he and his colleague. Or. Lambert, had done at the conference re the maintenance of the Hagley Park road.

The conference wore not disposed to agree to the proposals of the city delegates, who therefore retired from the meeting. His Worship repeated the proposals made at the conference, which resulted in a further postponement of the question for a week. He brought the matter forward now in order that the Council might take such action as would strengthen the hands of their delegates at the meeting on Friday next. Cr. Gapes concnrred what bad fallen from the Mayor. He hold that the Park was the property of the people of the Oanterbnrv district, and the city was not more interested than any other locality. Hence the County Council was the body to maintain the Park roads. He proposed — “ That the action of the Mayor and Or, Lambert be approved." Seconded by Or. Cherrill, and carried. Or. Lambert drew attention to the fact that the fountain in Cathedral square was dry, and as the summer months were advancing he suggested that something should be done.

Referred to the chairman of works committee with power to act. Letters to the Council were considered and referred to certain committtees to be dealt with.

It was resolved—“ That the Town clerk write the directors of the Tramway Company stating that the Council would be prepared to meet them re tramway concession, etc., on the following Monday night.” The city surveyor’s report was read as follows: —

1. Five cases of breaches of the building by-law were decided in the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day in favor of the Council. 2. Horatio street and Chudley’s lane have been furnished •with concrete channels. 3. Cashel street bridge will be open for traffic in two or three days. 4. Bowman’s corner has been rolled with the steam roller, and the account for the work now stands thus :—IJ chains channelling (.27), JGiO 10s: labor, .£4 Is; rolling, .21 15s; 25 yards of metal, at 10s Gd, -Ei3 2a 6d—total, .£29 18a 6d. 5. The pipes are now down in the artesian, Victoria street, to a depth of 156 ft. 6ia.

The report was approved. A letter was read from three residents of St. Albans, complaining of the conduct of a cabman.

A report on the case from the ranger was also read.

It was not considered necessary to deal further with the letter, which ■ was exceedingly amusing, and created some merriment.

Ibis concluded the business. The Oounoi then adjourned at 7.30 o’clock.
