THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE CLARENCE.
The largest concourse of people that ever congregated together on any part of the river met recently at Rooky Month. For the last two days all sorts of rumors were afloat as to the action of one of the competitors in to-day’s great contest, but little heed waa taken by the general public. Nevertheless, something occurred immediately after the start, in the champion outrigger race, that looked very suspicious. Rush was in excellent condition, never better in his life, and the race one of the easiest won. Triokett’s oondition may havs been good, but he looked careworn, as if something tronbled him. McDonald and Pearce, the other starter*, were in good condition. On the start being given, the lot got away pretty well together, Trickett slightly leading. On going about a quarter of a mile, Pearce, by some means fouled with Trickett’e boat, Rush soon after assumed the lead, and at Rush’* Hotel he was some fifteen lengths ahead o£ 'Trickett, M’Donald ten lengths in the rear. Pearce, soon after the contretemps with Trickett, dropped to the rear, and never attempted to get up. This order of things continued until within a quarter of a mile from home, when Rush put on a spurt, Trickett doing likewise, but without much alteration. Trickett did gain for a short distance, but seemingly on sufferance. Rush gained the flagship, and was hailed the winner, M'Dooald second, Trickett third, Pearce out of sight. Rash was installed first favorite yesterday, and had the decided call in the betting ; 4 to 3 on Rush was offered by his admirers without finding much accommodation.
A later telegram conveys the idea that there are very strong suspicions that a very shady transaction has taken place in connection with the above foul.
