ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At a meeting of this Council, held last Monday evening, the Mayor stated that the overdraft at the Bank was £67 12s 2d. With regard to a petition presented from t.to residents of Havelock street, proving tor thicoostruction of concrete channelling in that street, it was resolved to do tho work asked far as soon as the funds of the Council would permit. Tho retrenchment committee recommended the reduction of the clerk’s salary to £125 per annum, and the engineer'll salary to £l5O Or. Harrison deprecated, the recommendations of the report, and moved that it be referred back to the committee. After considerable discussion, tho report of tho committee was adopted. Tho lighting committee’s report recommended lamps to bo lit half an hour after sundown till midnight, the consent of the ratepayers _ for striking n separate rate of twopence in tho £ to be asked, and if obtained, tenders to be called for erecting twenty more lamps. The report vras adopted after some discussion. It was resolved to take action against certain persons for neglecting to keep thoir premises clean. It was resolved to call for tenders for the •amps required by the fire brigade, and to ■write to the Insurance Association _to ascertain how much money the association would he willing to contribute towards the purchase ct a steam fire engine. The meeting then went into committee on the question of 1 swing the reserves.
