Ocean-going steamers are expensive institutions. It is Btated that a steamer Buch as the Orient or the Lusitania absorbs something like .£22,000 in expenses for the round voyage from the old country to Melbourne and back. The Smiling Morn will probably sail to-day for Sydney, where it is the purpose of the master to dock the vessel and get her reclassed. ' The vessels at Kaipara loading there on October 14th were, the Prince Alfred, Aratapu, Fleetwing, Enterprise, Telegraph, Cleopatra, Kate McGregor. There were also the Stay, Chira, Nightingale, Oamarn, Look-out, Vision, Transport, and Julius Vogel, loading for various ports. The Anthons and the Marmion left there on October 14th for Dunedin. The Torea left Kaipara on Thursday last, passed Cape Esrmont next day, Cape Campbell on Saturday, and anchored in Port at 10.30 a.m. The steamers to leave here to-day are the Hawea, for Wellington, Picton, Nelson, Taranaki, and Manukau, transhipping cargo and passengers at Nelson for West Coast ports ; the Arawata, for Southern ports and Melbourne ; and the Wakatipu, for Wellington and Sydney. The Hannah Barrett is to go to Kaipara from bare. The Mand Graham, of this port, arrived yesterday at Picton, from Napier, to load for this port. The brigantine Sea Bird. Captain Smith, left Hokianga on Sunday week last and passed Cape Campbell on the 15th, Kaikoura last Saturday, and arrived in harbor on Sunday morning. She was berthed yesterday at Peacock's wharf. The ketch Comet, which left here on Saturday for Wellington, ran back into Port yesterday. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. New Plymouth, October 19. The s.s. Wellington, October 18. Arrived—Hero, from Auckland ; Sarah Pile, brigantine, from Dunedin; Saucy Lass and Wave of Life, schooners, from Lyttelton; Onward, schooner, from Kaiapoi. Sailed—Arawata, for Melbourne via the South. Passengers—Mesdames Startup, Fisher, Hays, Notman, Cotterill, Ireland, Woodford, and Child, Dr. Skae, Messrs Pascoe, Shalton, Pavitt, Tancred, Fisher. Jackson (3), Barrow, Hodman, Rutland, Davidson, Harrop, Maxwell, Tolhurst Greenfield, Mnir, Cruickshank, Bidwell, Martin, Drahaa, Young, and Hayes. Thirteen steerage.
