THE POLICE REDUCTIONS.

[Bz Telbgbaph.]

fpßoai oxm owk ooebsspondbnt.J WELLINGTON, October 16.

As there seems to be still some misapprehension as to the nature of the reductions among the inspectors and sub-inspectors of the police. Colonel Reader, the Commissioner of Constabulary, has furnished the “ Post” with an official return, which throws considerable light on the matter, and shows very clearly that in deciding how individual officers should be dealt with, length of service is the only consideration which is taken intp account. According to the return alluded to, the following is a list of the inspectors, together with the dates of their appointment to office, to whom notice has been sent offering them the alternative either of submitting to a reduction or leaving the service with the usual compensation allowance:—lnspector Moore, Ist July, 1873 ; Inspector Thompson, Ist July, 1873; Inspector Fox, Ist July, 1873 ; Inspector Mallard, 23rd January, 1875 ; Inspector Kiely, 7th May, 1875 ; Inspector Feast, 28th June, 1875. There were five other inspectors whose names were originally mentioned for reduction, but who will not be interfered with, acting on the principle of seniority already referred to, now that their superior length of service has been ascertained. The following is a list of those officers, with their date of appointment:— Inspector Fender, Ist May, 1864 ; Inspector Buckley, Ist July, 1866 ; Inspector Scully,. 16th December, 1866; Inspector Emerson, Ist July, 1868; Inspector Hickson, 20th August, 1862. The following is a list of sub* inspectors marked for reduction, with their respective dates of appointment : SubInspector Kenny, 9th June, 1869 j SubInspector Bullen, 14th March, 1870; SubInspeotor O’Donnell, 10th September, 1872 ; Sub-Inspector Goodall, 18th June, 1873 ; Sub-Inspector Pardy, 17th November, 1875 ; Sub-Inspector Smith, Ist May, 1877.
