CHRIST'S COLLEGE GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
ANNUAL SPORTS. Judge—Mr 0. O. Oorfe ; starters—Messrs E. A. Worthy and T. D. Condell; timekeeper—Mr J. B. Harrison; committee —W. J. Ootterill, H. H. Lee, H. H. Mathias, W. G. Hellish, W. Studholme, O. T. Newton. The following events were contested for yesterday after we went to press : Throwing the Cricket Ball, open to the whole school—Newton, 93yds 2£t, 1 ; Ootterill, 85yds 2ft, 2; Studholme, 83yds, 3. There were six entries, and the throwing was on the whole creditable, the first boy beating the best throw last year by 8 yards. Long Jump, open to boys under fourteen years of age—E. Gerrard, 13ft lOin, 1; M. Stack, 13ft 2in, 2 ; H. Bristol, 13ft 2in, 3. There were eight entries for this event, but five only started, their names being—H. Bristol, M. Stack, E. Garrard, O. Searell, and M. Robinson. The competition was keen, being confined chiefly to the three who obtained places as indicated. Long Jump, open to whole school—o. T. Newton, 19ft lOin, 1; W. P. Studholme, 17ft 2in, 2 ; W. Ootterill, 16ft lin, 3. The entries were :—W. P. Studholme, W. Ootterill, H. H. Lee, O. T. Newton, O. D. Bowen, J. Newell and W. Webb. All started save H. H. Lee. A good deal of interest was taken in this event. The contest lay between Newton, Studholme and Ootterill, the first favorite being Newton, who realised the expectations of his admirers by coming in a winner by a considerable distance ahead of the second man. The jumping of the other, however, was very creditable. High Jump, open to boys under fourteen years of age—E. Gerard, 4ft Sin, 1 ; H. Kimbell, 4ft lin, 2 ; H. Miller, 4ft lin, 3. There were seven entries and five competed, namely, the three above named and Bristol and Harper. High Jump, open to whole school —Studholme, sft lin, 1 ; Bowen, sft, 2 ; Newton, 3. Nine entered for this race, but only those placed competed. Newton, though the prettiest jumper, put himself out of the event soon after starting, spending his strength by taking long runs. Mile Race—Open to boys under fourteen years of age. A second prize was given in this race. Eight started. R. Harley, 1; E. Griffith, 2 ; W. Oox, 3. This was a very pretty race. A good start being obtained, Harley led off with a spurt, but subsequently slackened his pace, and Mcßeth came up with a rush, and put on a killing pace, which gave him the lead for the first round, but by that time he was thoroughly done up, and, with Stack for his companion, fell out of the race shortly after passing the starting point on the second round. The position of the competitors then was—Harley leading, with Griffith _ second, and Cox third, the rest nowhere. This course was maintained to the finish, notwithstanding a plucky effort by the second man to overtake Harley on the third round. The last-named boy ran splendidly, and came in at the finish with a magnificent spurt, as fresh as paint and fully six yards ahead of Griffith, second, who led Oox by about ten yards. It was one of the prettiest races ever witnessed on the ground. Time, smin. 40seo. Milo Race—Open to whole school. A second prizs was given in this race. Eight boys entered, but only three started. H. H. Mathias, 1 ; H. Haast, 2 ; A Williams, 3. The race was a gift to Mathias, but he, nevertheless, made good running. Time, smin. 4 4 sth sec.
100 Yards Race-Open to boys under eleven. There were six competitors. L. Kolleston, 1 j W. Harman, 2. Time, 15£ secs.
100 Yards—Open to boys under fourteen. Nine ran in this race. H. Miller, 1 j H. Q-. Bristol, 2 ; L Harley, 3. Time, ISsecs. 100 Yards—Open to whole school. There were twenty-throe entries for this event, but only eleven started. Webb, 1 ; Ootterill, 2. This was a well-contested race, especially by the two first-named men, between whom it appeared to be a dead heat, but the judge gave the race in favour of Webb, who was, perhaps, a shade ahead of Cotterill. Time, IHseos. 100 Yards, open to boys under 12; nine started. W. Pavitt, 1; L. Kolleston, 2. Quarter-mile Race ; open to whole school. Second prize given. W. Hellish, 1; Q-. Palmer, 2 ; W. Webb, 3. This was a good race between eight of the big boys. Palmer led off to a good start, but was overtaken by Mellish, and a struggle between the pair for first place followed, ending in a victory for Mellish, closely followed by Palmer, and Webb came in pretty well on the latter’s heels. Time, 58 secs.
Quarter-mile; open to boys under 15. Mr Q-ould’s Oup. Eight started. 0. Tarlease, 1 ; W. Fisher, 2; W. Helmore, 3. Time, 66 secs. This concluded part one on the programme. The sports will be continued and finished today (weather permitting), to commence at two o’clock.
