INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the Industrial Association was held yesterday ; Mr J. P. Jameson in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. Several apologies for non-attendance were received. The programme for the meeting of members on the 27th instant was brought up. The question of the obtaining of chairs from England by the Cathedral Commission was discussed, and it was resolved that the association regret that the Cathedral Commission should have decided to send home for chairs for the Cathedral without first ascertaining whether they could be made in the colony. The question of the duties now charged on carriage trimmings was brought up by Messrs Howland and Moor, and it was resolved that the Government should bo written to on the subject. Mr Charters brought before the mooting specimens of felloes of very good make, manufactured by Mr Burke of Auckland. The question of the Railway tariff and its prohibitive effect upon various industries, especially pottery, was discussed at some length, and ultimately, on the motion of Mr Hulbert, it was resolved that a committee be appointed to consider the items of the now tariff as affecting local industries, such committee to consist of Messrs Jenkins, Charters and Neighbours, to report upon the next meeting. Mr Jenkins brought under the notice of the committee the action of the Lyttelton Harbor Board m _ having their boilers for the pumping machinery made at home. Ho would move—“ That this association regrets to learn that the consulting engineers to the Lyttelton Harbor Board disobeyed the positive instructions from that body for the making of the boilers for the pumping engine in the colony and ordered them to be made in the old country, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Harbor Board.” Mr Charters seconded the motion, which was carried. The meeting then adjourned.
